What happened through 1096-1099? The time of the First Crusade, in 1096 – 1099, the Frankish armies encountered fortified settlements called castles.
What happened through the 12th and 13th centuries? In the late 12th and early 13th centuries, scientific approaches to castle defense emerged a lot.
What are the scientific designs of a castle? Until the late 12th century castles generally had few defensive features such as curtainwalls and arrowslits but had a keep or donjon that were usually square.
What features do castles have? Castles have mottes, baily and enceinte, curtain wall, gatehouse and motes to help defend the castle/kingdom from enemies.
Where can you find most castles? Castles are mostly found on high mountains, in the middle of a moat, and on a flat piece of land.
What is a Social centre? A Social centre is a place where the lord would control his lands from. (so it is really just a special room for the lord only)
What is etymology? Etymology is: The word castle is derived from the Latin word caslellum witch is a diminutive of the word castrum, meaning “fortified place”.
What does gunpowder have to do with castles? Gunpowder is included with castles so the weapons (not swords) have amo or ammunition to use in battle.
What do moats do? Moats help the castle people because they are bodies of water that surround castles, so it’s used for defense.
What are castles made of? Most castles are made out of timber and stone. Castles take 50 people 40 working days to build.
Extra information A castle is a type of fortified structure built in Europe and the middle east during the middle ages.
