The Early Days • Student Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC) Representative – Feedback from peers suggested there was a lack of communication between the year groups. • Inspiration drawn from other schemes at different universities. • Proposed at the SSLC meeting in April. • Reviewed at an SSLC meeting in June.

  3. Initial Setup • May 2011 - Recruiting new students through discussion and Facebook. • June 2011 - The Buddy Scheme Handbook was created and worked on with Professor Esther Reed. • August 2011 - Letter for new students with information on the scheme was sent. • September 2011 – Induction Day talk about the Buddy Scheme and the new students’ chance to sign up. • September 2011 – The Theology Party.

Maintaining the Scheme • Prompting second-year students to contact their buddies for a library tour. • Continuing to promote the Buddy Scheme. • Supporting my own ‘Buddy group’ through meetings (group and individual) as well as encouraging text messages and emails. • Meeting with Alex Ratcliffe to discuss how to improve the scheme.

  5. Achievements and Challenges Achievements: • All success is due to the support of the Theology Department staff and the Change Agents initiative. • Almost all buddies met again after the initial meeting. • Some buddy groups established good friendships. • The boundary between first-year and second-year pupils began to break down. • Parents feel reassured at Open Days. Challenges: • Most buddy groups did not meet up regularly.

  6. The Future of the Buddy Scheme • June 2012 – New recruitment begins. • June 2012 – Buddy Scheme Handbook will be updated and sent to all new Buddies. • August 2012 – Letter for new students with details of the scheme will be sent. • September 2012 – Induction Day talk about the Buddy Scheme. • September 2012 – Group allocation. • September 2012 – Buddy Training Session. • October 2012 - “Speed-dating” social. • January 2013 – Post-exam Cathedral trip.
