  10. Foot binding • Foot binding - This practice lasted from the tenth century to 1911, when it was banned by the new Chinese republic. • Continued after - illegally and eventually frowned upon. • Sexuality • Sign of wealth Next slide: Concubinage

Concubinage • Role was to provide sexual pleasure • Husband’s right • Girl usually came from a house of prostitution where she began as a child slave • Wives subservient to husbands so wives must accept into the household • Sex for pleasure (concubine) vs. sex for procreation (wife) Next Slide: Infanticide

  16. Revolution • Inefficient emperors who had absolute power but used it little or poorly • Decline of Manchu (conquering race of people) leadership • Political corruption and inefficiency • Population growth, social poverty, lack of cultivatable land • No large industrial movement
