Out of these 51 practices returned 658 audits for breast bowel and lung. Key findings suggest that GPs are appropriately managing cancer patients in primary care, however the audit findings are not comparable to the networks 2ww baseline. This was an encouraging audit that shows that practice in primary care is a good standard however further work needs to be done with the Practice Profiles to identify area’s that require more work. The GP audit was a useful tool to lay the groundwork for the Networks Primary Care engagement projects. CHIPs started working in Dec 2009 and Jan 2010 PRACTICE PROFILES and GP LEADERSHIP The General Practice profiles bring together a range of process and outcomes information relevant to cancer in primary care. They provide readily available and comparative information for benchmarking and reviewing variations at a General Practice level. They are not for the purpose of performance management and there are no ‘right or wrong’ answers. Following on from the GP Audit, the network set about disseminating the Practice Profiles. The GP project lead has assessed each profile and this has been used to inform the GP leadership programme. Visits to outlying practices have commenced and the Network will work individually with at least 10% to develop action plans. • Cancer Health Improvement Practitioners • North Trent Cancer Network has been piloting the use of Cancer Health Improvement Practitioners (CHIPs) in each PCT locality to improve awareness and early diagnosis of lung, breast and bowel cancer. • The CHIPs have used a wide range of interventions to engage with groups at a grassroots level by tapping into existing community groups and going to the places that they meet. • Key elements of the CHIPs approach have been: • Interventions in the community with the community • GP surgeries, supermarkets, over 50s clubs, community forums • Developing champions • Developing a Toolkit of resource materials • Data dashboard to monitor impact RISK ASSESSMENT TOOL NTCN has been selected to participate in the national pilot for the Risk Assessment Tool (RAT). The Network has had an excellent response to the call for action to participate. 37 practices have signed up to test the usability of the tool. The project runs for 6 months from March to August 2011 and will be formally evaluated using quantitative and qualitative measures. 2010/2011 locality bids for national monies 4 PCTs within the Network have successfully secured Department of Health funding to promote awareness and earlier diagnosis. NHS Derbyshire County Reducing the Burden of Bowel Cancer The project will target the 50+ age group and the public awareness initiatives will focus on the 20% most deprived wards in Derbyshire. Public knowledge, attitudes and behaviour towards symptoms of bowel cancer. Primary care identification of symptoms, use of investigations and referral pathways NHS Sheffield Primary Care Focus The project is GP-led and involves a partnership approach with targeted practices (identified via analysis of key cancer data) to develop bespoke action plans to address cancer early diagnosis and screening. The Cancer Health Improvement Practitioner would also link into the practice based work. NHS Doncaster Early Cancer Initiative This project aims to improve the 1 year survival rates of the three main cause of cancer mortality in Doncaster i.e. breast, bowel and lung cancer. As a proxy for this the project aims to increase the number of people diagnosed with an early and therefore treatable cancer. This project builds on work carried out in 2007, 2008 and 2009 in Doncaster on the early diagnosis of lung cancer and applies that methodology to both breast and bowel cancer. NHS Barnsley Lung Cancer Awareness and Early Diagnosis Project aims to adopt a focused approach, modeled on the NHS Doncaster “cough cough” campaign, the project aims to improve life expectancy and reduce health inequalities in Barnsley by focusing on raising awareness and promoting earlier presentation leading to the earlier identification and diagnosis of lung cancer within disadvantaged areas. NHS Rotherham NTCN continues to support Rotherham's Health Improvement agenda with input from the data team & Service Improvement NHS Bassetlaw The PCT has a Cancer Health Improvement Practitioner funded by the Network who has completed a Lung cancer campaign and is working on a bowel cancer awareness campaign.
