  3. Moses • Biblical books, (Exodus, Numbers, Deuteronomy) • Exodus (escape from Egypt) • Moses- Mount Sinai • Returns with tablets bearing 10 commandments

  4. 10 Commandments • Moral Laws • Hebrew God (Yahweh) • Revealed to Moses • Relationship with Yahweh • I am the Lord your God who brought you out of Egypt, You shall have no other Gods. • You shall not make or worship idols. • You shall not swear falsely by the name of the Lord your God 4. Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy

  5. 10 Commandments • Honor your father and mother. • You shall not murder. • You shall not commit adultery. • You shall not steal. • You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor • You shall not covet your neighbor’s belongings.

  6. Development of Judaism • Hebrews to follow commandments • Covenant = agreement with Yahweh • Yahweh sends Moses (Found a holy nation) • Scriptures, Old Testament • Creation of world • Special Mission Hebrews

  7. Laws & Ethics • Torah • 5 books of Old Testament • Hebrew code of Law • Kindness to poor & slaves • Cornerstone of Religion • Synagogue (keeps scroll handwritten in Hebrew)

  8. Beliefs • Yahweh • Hebrews God • Food & Water • Sinned suffer • Hebrews feared • Develop people have choice (Good & Evil) • Yahweh viewed as spiritual force

  9. Beliefs Continued • Monotheistic • Ethical monotheism • Emphasized ethics • Proper conduct • Judeo-Christian ethics today • Ideas from Hebrews spread to Western Civilizations
