Software Testing As a Career Michael Kammer CSTE Palm Inc. QA Hardware/Software Test Engineer Testing Software and Hardware should be fun!
What makes a good tester? • Personal experience in many aspects of technology • The ability to understand the end users’ needs • Stamina: The ability to always try “one more regression” • The feeling that there is always a “better” way to do things Testing Software and Hardware should be fun!
Testing Is Not Programming • Testing requires an ability to “do the unexpected” • Many testers “fall into testing rather than choosing the field” • There is much more to a program than the basic functions. It is necessary to test beyond the obvious Testing Software and Hardware should be fun!
Academic Training • Academic training teaches a person to check for “does it work this way?”, But it does not teach “should it work this way?” • It is common for people with “Development Skills” to use testing only as a way to move to a development career Testing Software and Hardware should be fun!
Real Life • To find obscure bugs, it is necessary to have a wide exposure to different equipment and software • The tester’s desire is to find problems before it gets to the customer • The QA engineer’s desire is to make sure the software is written properly in the first place. Testing Software and Hardware should be fun!
Testing is Fun • Very few jobs actually pay you to criticize others! Testing Software and Hardware should be fun!
