  1. Pulse Dlsu: Working in NGO and Gov’t Branches Results and Interpretations July 12 – 16, 2010

  2. The survey questionnaires were distributed to the De La Salle University student body with the help of the members of the Office of the President. The sample was taken from first available population which is called accidental sampling. There were a total of 510 collected filled up surveys.

  3. 1. A. Have you given thought of working in the government? Yes or No? Result: Yes: 221 No: 289 Total : 510

  4. Based on the percentage graph, there’s a dominant of only 7% that students have not given a thought of working in the government.

  5. B. In Non Governmental Organization (NGO)? Yes or No? Result: Yes: 301 No: 209 Total: 510

  6. Based on the percentage graph, there’s a dominant of 9% that DLSU students have given a thought of working in Non Governmental Organization.

  7. 2. What has influenced you to consider a career in the government Or NGO? Family: 165 Friends: 114 School: 167 Political advertisements: 96 Others: 14

  8. Based on the percentage graph, there’s a tie between the school and family in terms of influencing the students of DLSU in considering a career in government or NGO’s, second is by the influence of friends and third by the political advertisements. Some students cited other sources of influence that composed the 3%, these are Social concern, health, zoning, trade,tourism, infrastructure, transparency, salary, experience/observation, self, desire to serve the country, celebrities, course and, media.

  9. 3. Given a chance what would you like to advocate having a position in the government or NGO? Result: Alleviation of Poverty: 249 Environmentalism: 241 Education for all: 273 Advocacy for the working and street children: 157 Others: 10

  10.  Based on the percentage graph most students will advocate for the education of all Filipinos, second is the alleviation of poverty, third is the environmentalism and lastly the advocacy for the working and street children. There’s 1% other reasons that the students of DLSU will advocate for, these are technological advancement, infrastructure, discipline, human rights / anti corruption, tourism and, saving the animals.

  11. 4. Given a chance to work in the government, which department would you apply for or aspire for? Results: Department of Agriculture: 55 Department of Budget and Management: 144 Department of Education, Culture and Sports: 189 Department of Energy: 55 Department of Environment and Natural Resources: 121 Department of Finance: 143

Department of Foreign Affairs: 181 Department of Health: 98 Department of the Interior and Local Government: 62 Department of Public Works and Highways: 51 Department of Tourism: 180 Department of Trade and Industry: 100 Civil Service Commission: 22 Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas: 160 Philippine Embassies: 155 Others: 14

Based on the percentage there are tie ups in the different departments that the students of DLSU will aspire for, most students of DLSU will aspire for Dept. of Foreign Affairs, Dept. of Education, Culture and Sports, and Dept. of Tourism which the three of them got 11%, the highest percentage. Second dominant possible choice of the students are the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, Philippine embassies and Dept. of Finance. Third are Dept. of Budget and management, Dept. of Environment and Natural Resources which both get 7%.

  14. Runner ups in order are Dept. of Trade and Industry, Dept. of Health, Dept. of Interior and Local Government, tie ups are Dept. of Agriculture, Dept. of Energy, and Dept. of Public Works and Highways. The least choice of department is the Civil Service Department which only got 1%. There are other departments that the students suggested that composed of the 1%, These are Department Of Defense, Office of the President, Department Of Science And Technology, Bureau Of Internal Revenue, Armed Forces Of The Philippines, Department Of Justice, National Economic And Development Authority, Department Of Transportation And Communications, Senate, Bureau of Customs, Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission, and Commission on Audit.

  15. 5. Took the Civil Service Exam? Yes or No? Results: Yes: 17 No: 454 Total: 471

  16. Only 4% of the 471 students who answered this question had taken the civil service exam. 39 students chose to not answer this question that leads to not attaining the 510 total target answers.

  17. 6. Planning to take Civil Service Exam? Yes or No? Results: Yes: 212 No: 280

  18. Based on the percentage result, there’s a dominant of only 7% that students doesn’t plan to take up Civil Service Exam. But there are a pretty good number of students that plans to.

  19. 7. Would you apply if the Civil Service Commission comes to DLSU? Yes or No? Results: Yes: 217 No: 279

  20. There’s only a 6% dominant that the students of DLSU won’t apply for Civil Service Exam even if the Civil Service Commission comes in De La Salle University.

  21. 8. Would you be willing to attend a seminar with invited speakers from different sectors of the government and NGO that would talk about the careers in working in it? Yes or No? Results: Yes: 336 No: 162

  22.  Almost three fourth of the respondents, students of DLSU, would be willing to attend a seminar about working in the government and NGOs.

  23. 9. Are you interested in a government and NGO job fair? Yes or No? Results: Yes: 280 No: 218

  24.  Majority of the students of DLSU would be interested in a government and NGO job fair most especially if it will be held inside the De La Salle University Campus.

  25. 10. Would you consider applying in a government department or a NGO for your OJT? Yes or No? Results: Yes: 280 No: 213

  26. Majority of the students of DLSU would consider having their On Job Training in government branches or Non Governmental Organizations. This result can be linked with the previous question that if there’s a job of fair of government and NGO that can be hold inside De La Salle campus, students will be more encouraged to apply for government branches or Non Governmental Organizations.

  27. Conclusion: Having a forum talk with a distinguished government employee can boost the morale in working for the government and Non Governmental Organizations. This can also help in encouraging the students of De La Salle University to consider a career in Government aside from private sectors.
