  4. DP08 Budgets • Min $20K to $500K per annum • 1-5 year project duration NB if you include items such as Fellowships or Teaching Relief please ensure per annum amount will still exceed $20K if these are not approved otherwise application is invalid

  5. DP08 Budgets You can ask ARC for: • Salaries & 28% on-costs for: • ARC Fellows eg APD/ARF/QEII/APF • research assistants/associates • stipend for PhD students @ $25,118 • Teaching Relief (TR)* for CIs • Equipment >$1000 • Maintenance (equip <$1000) • Travel

DP08 Budgets You can’t ask ARC for (FR p19): • Capital works & general infrastructure • Salaries for CIs and PIs • Teaching Relief (TR)* for CIs unless in application • Special Studies Program • Research Support for PIs* • Student fees eg HECs, HELP • Computer Facilities for molecular analysis • Basic facilities (eg laptops) • Publication costs • Costs not directly related to project

  7. DP08 Budgets Research Support for PIs (FR p20): • No payment of salary/support to PIs • “short term project support for travel within Australia for investigators visiting from overseas but excludes the costs of travel to & from Aus”

  8. DP08 Budgets FAQs: • How much cash should I ask for from the ARC? • If ARC only gives 65% should I ‘inflate’ my budget? • If I ask for less am I more likely to get funded?

  9. DP08 Budgets How much cash should I ask for from the ARC? • Ask for the amount of cash which is viable to do the project, no more & no less • JUSTIFY ALL your requests

  10. DP08 Budgets If ARC only gives 65% should I ‘inflate’ my budget? • NO! • Assessors are experienced grant readers and researchers, they know an inflated budget when they see one • JUSTIFY ALL your requests

  11. DP08 Budgets If I ask for less am I more likely to get funded? • NO! • Your project will be assessed and ranked based on the selection criteria, then appropriateness of budget is considered • JUSTIFY ALL your requests

C2 Justification of Funding Requested from ARC: Personnel “A full-time Research Fellow Level B is required for this project” vs “This is a highly labour intensive research program requiring an high level of organisation. A full-time Research Fellow is required for the duration of the grant to implement, guide and monitor the progress with all five inter-related phases of the research. This person will be a consistent source for enquiries, co-ordinate the day-to day development and running of the studies under the guidance of the CIs, and provide continuous and timely feedback to stakeholders. Therefore this person will need to be a senior researcher (ie post-doc) with excellent project management skills and experience in the successful coordination of large scale research studies. As a result the position has been classified, in accordance with Monash policy, at Level B step 1 with annual increments.”

C2 Justification of Funding Requested from ARC: Teaching Relief “TR for CI X is requested for 6 months in year 2 of the project” vs “CI X has extensive experience required to conduct the experiments which must be conducted in the second year of the project thus warranting approval of TR. If CI X was not granted TR it would be necessary to train a Research Fellow level B in this specialised field to an appropriate standard, costs for such an appointment would be $” Or “The data analysis/interpretation and preparation of research outputs/outcomes must be conducted by CI X in the final stage of the project. If CI X was not granted TR it would seriously impact on the delivery of anticipated research outcomes.”

C2 Justification of Funding Requested from ARC: Equipment (ITA p38) “Funding for a (new) Machine That Goes Bing is requested” vs “The hosting dept/lab has a Machine That Goes Bing however it is not available to staff for the required time periods to complete sample analysis required for this project. Company has proved an estimate of $ to purchase, install and service this equipment” Or “The existing Machine That Goes Bing was purchased in 1960 and requires sample sizes in excess of those which can be collected in the current project. It would seriously impact on the delivery of anticipated research outcomes if this equipment were not funded.” Or “Access to a Machine That Goes Bing at commercial rates would be $$ thus imposing serious time/cost restrictions for the completion of the work.”

C2 Justification of Funding Requested from ARC: Travel “Travel & accommodation at research sites 4 times pa for CI and Research Fellow @ $1000 each = $4000 pa Airfares for all CIs and Research Fellow to International conference in year 3 @ 4 x $2500” vs “Travel to & accommodation at the research sites, costed in accordance with Monash policy,… Attendance at the International conference of XX represents an essential component of the project in terms of dissemination of research outcomes and communication of results. The trip will also be used to visit PI labs to further collaboration/study techniques etc”

C3 Details of Non-ARC Contributions (ITA p38) Monash University contributes the direct costs of CI X salary and on-costs ($ amount) plus in-direct costs of infrastructure support (estimated at $ amount). In addition the University contributes… Organisation of Partner Investigator contributes direct costs of PI Y salary and on-costs ($ amount) plus in-direct costs of infrastructure support (estimated at $ amount). In addition further costs for ZZ are contributed.

  18. DP08 Budget Essential Tips • If applying for APD/ARF/QEII/APF does this cover full salary + on-costs or is there a shortfall to be covered by Uni? (need approval from HoD/HoS) • If you have CIs from other Depts/Unis WHO gets what $ especially if budget is cut?
