New TT60 Beam Line for the LHC Phase II Collimation Project- First Ideas - Christoph Hessler TL Meeting 21.08.2008
Project Objectives Facility to test: • TCDS, TCDQ, TPSG • Vacuum windows • Collimators phase II (entire collimators and materials) • Beam instrumentation (screens, beam loss monitors) • Electronics • …
Beam Parameters • Protons: • Beam energy: 450 GeV (or slightly different 445 GeV) • Pulse energy: up to 2.4 MJ • Bunch intensity: 5.0 · 109 to 1.15 · 1011 • Number of bunches: 1 – 288 • Bunch spacing: ~25 ns • Pulse length: ~ 7 ms • Beam size at target: variable around 1 mm2(Optics tunability: 1s r.m.s. from 0.5 mm - or below, 0.1 mm as suggested by R. Schmidt - to 2 mm?) and possibility to perform elliptical beam. • Heavy ions: • Beam energy: 177.4 GeV/nucleon (36.9 TeV per ion) • Pulse energy: up to 28 kJ • Pulse length: ~12 ms NOTE: present MKE PFNs are capable to extract 7 ms batch length, not 12 ms. To be studied. • Spot size: variable around 1 mm2

Outlook • Optimization of beam line geometry to achieve a s of 0.1 mm:Additional space? Additional magnets? • Beam line design: • Switchyard • Beam line (aperture, trajectory correction, stability…) • Magnet specification • Vacuum system specification (chamber dimensions, pumping system) • Survival of exit window • Beam instrumentation requirements • Beam dump • SPS extraction system upgrades • Test set up (O. Aberle):Dimensions, remote handling, general services, beam instrumentation, shielding • Radiological impact – including impacts on ventilation, cooling… • Machine Protection interlocking system • Potential issue: T1 removal (target + shielding) – Residual activation and all RP issues. New space needed: where? How much space? • Propose 2 scenarios for this new beam line + test area: - Scenario 1: cheap (and probably dirty)- Scenario 2: more perfect option
