  2. Completing a FAFSA • In order to review your eligibility for financial aid, you must complete a FAFSA every year. • You may re-apply after January 1st • www.pin.ed.gov • www.fafsa.ed.gov • You SHOULD NOT pay to complete the FAFSA

Completing a FAFSA • Once a FAFSA is processed through the Department of Education, Appalachian will download the FAFSA and begin processing your information. • Once your FAFSA is received, ASU will check for any eligibility for Federal Grants/Scholarships, State Grants/Scholarships, and Federal Direct Loans. Students will be awarded based on eligibility. • One in three FAFSAs are selected for a process called verification.

  4. Completing a FAFSA • The Federal Government will no longer allow us to accept tax return copies when completing verification. • When completing your FAFSA use the IRS Data Retrieval tool to bring in your tax information. • If you cannot use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, you may request a tax return transcript and send in a signed copy.

  5. Dependency Status • To be considered an independent student, you must be able to answer “Yes” to at least one of the Dependency Questions on the FAFSA (Questions 45-57)

Award Letter • Once a student has been awarded, the award letter will only be viewable via the AppalNet account. • ASU will no longer be mailing paper copies of the award letter. • Instructions regarding accepting/declining the award letter can be found via our website at www.financialaid.appstate.edu.

  12. Basics to Financial Aid • ASU is required to adjust aid based on registered hours at the census date (Drop/Add date). • Aid will be adjusted based on actual hours.

  13. Fund Disbursements • In order for funds to be disbursed to the university, the student/parent must complete all necessary requirements. • Required documents can be downloaded from our website, www.financialaid.appstate.edu, and the student’s AppalNet account

  14. Fund Disbursements • Funds cannot be disbursed to the University earlier than 10 days prior to the beginning of the term. • All funds may not be applied to the student’s account simultaneously. They will be applied once the University receives the funds.

  15. Fund Disbursements • Refunds are disbursed from The Office of Student Accounts. All refund questions should be directed to the Office of Student Accounts at 828.262.2113, then press option “0.” • Refunds are normally processed after the first day of classes for the term.

  16. Guaranteed Funds • In order for loans to be guaranteed, you must complete the required steps (i.e. Master Promissory Note, loan counseling, Plus request form) • The instructions for loans can be found on our website beneath the “Applying for Financial Aid” link.

  17. Student Responsibility • It is the student’s responsibility to check their AppalNet account at least twice per week (Sign in to AppalNet account, Check Email, Use Self-Service tab, etc.) • All notifications from our office will be communicated to the student via the AppalNet account.

  18. Student Responsibility • The student may grant access to a parent via their AppalNet account. • The student must grant parent access and the the parent must be on the FAFSA before we can discuss any specific account information with them.
