  1. From the Vonnegut’s chrono-synclastic infundibulum to the collapse of the wave function Catalina Curceanu, Kristian Piscicchia Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati dell’INFN & Centro Fermi Collaboration with Group lead by A. Bassi 24-28 February ECT* TRento

  2. AN OPEN PROBLEMS IN QUANTUM MECHANICS:the “measurement problem”collapse of the wave function

  3. When I hear about Schrodinger’s catI reach for my gun(Hawking)

  4. A different story:

  5. Traveling between Earth and Mars, the ship carrying Rumfoord and his dog, Kazakentered a phenomenon known as a chrono-synclastic infundibulum, which is defined in the novel as "those places ... where all the different kinds of truths fit together."

  6. The chrono-synclastic infundibula are places where these "ways to be right" coexist. When they enter the infundibulum, Rumfoord and Kazak become "wave phenomena", somewhat akin to the probability waves encountered in quantum mechanics.

  7. They exist along a spiral stretching from the Sun to the star Betelgeuse. When a planet, such as the Earth, intersects their spiral, Rumfoord and Kazak materialize, temporarily, on that planet.

  8. Possible “solutions”: • De Broglie – Bohm • Many-World Interpretations • Collapse of the w.f. • .....

  9. What are collapse models • Collapse models = solution of the measurement problem • Paradox-free description of the quantum world • Collapse models = rival theory of Quantum Mechanics • They give quantitative meaning to experiments testing quantum linearity • Collapse models as phenomenological models of an underlying pre-quantum theory • Can gravity causes the collapse? 15 Trieste: 5 luglio 2010

  10. Upper bounds on the parameter λ S.L. Adler and A. Bassi, Science325, 275 (2009) Present day technology allows for crucial tests 19 Trieste: 5 luglio 2010

  11. New analysis: using published data of the IGEX experiment The IGEX experiment is a low-activity Ge based experiment dedicated to the bb0n decay research. (C. E. Aalseth et al., IGEX collaboration Phys. Rev. C 59, 2108 (1999)) In (A. Morales et al., IGEX collaboration Phys. Lett. B 532, 8-14 (2002)) the published data acquired for an exposure of 80 kg day in the energy range: DE = (4 – 49) keV « me = 512keV → compatible with the non-relativistic assumption.

  12. New analysis: results and discussion The X-ray spectrum was fitted assuming the predicted energy dependence: With a(l) free parameter, bin contents are treated with Poisson statistics. Fit result:

  13. New analysis: results and discussion • The performed fit enables to set an upper limit on the reduction rate parameter: • ] • assuming the parameters used in Fu's work (aGRW = 10-7 m) → • l < 1.8 x 10-16 s-1 • (Fu's result l < 0.55 x 10-16 s-1) compatible with lGRW but... • 2) … correcting Fu's calculation according with (S. L. Adler, J. Phys. A40 (2007) 2935) • → l < 1.4 x 10-17 s-1

  14. New analysis: results and discussion 3) if a mass-proportional model is assumed (noise having a gravitational orgin?) then: l < 4.7 x 10-11 s-1 4) taking the 22 outer electrons (down to the 3s orbit BE3s = 180.1 eV) in the calculation: l < 2.5 x 10-18 s-1 l < 8.5 x 10-12 s-1 mass-proportional No mass-proportional

  15. Spontaneous emission including nuclear protons When the emission of nuclear protons is also considered, the spontaneous emission rate is: (Bassi’s talk) We consider in the calculation the 30 outermost electrons (down to 2s orbit) re = 4 x 10-10 m and take only the measured rate for k > 35 keV Moreover BE2s = 1.4 keV « kmin → electrons can be considered as quasi-free DE = (35 – 49) keV « me = 512keV → compatible with the non-relativistic assumption.

  16. Spontaneous emission including nuclear protons The interval DE = (35 – 49) keV of the IGEX measured X-ray spectrum was fitted assuming the predicted energy dependence: With a(l) free parameter, bin contents are treated with Poisson statistics. Fit result: a(l) = 148 ± 21 X/ n.d.f. = 0.8 Corresponding to the limits on the spontaneous emission rate: l < 8.1 x 10-20 s-1 l < 2.7 x 10-13 s-1 No mass-proportional Mass-proportional

  17. Spontaneous emission including nuclear protons Limits on the spontaneous emission rate: l < 8.1 x 10-20 s-1 l < 2.7 x 10-13 s-1 No mass-proportional Mass-proportional The stability of the above limits were tested by varing the interval DE. Fit results are consistent within 1s. The above limits are also consistent with a punctual evaluation, performed using one bin from H. S. Miley, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 65, 3092 (1990) corresponding to k = 101 keV The obtained limit for the Mass proportional assumption is: l < 3.1 x 10-13 s-1

  18. VIP experiment & VIP upgrade ...possible test of collapse models

  19. SDD detectors (usati in SIDDHARTA)

  20. The VIP-2 target – detector – veto counter setup

  21. LNGS

  22. VIP setup at LNGS February 2006

  23. Test with same method different physics: Violation of the Pauli Exclusion Principle & Collapse of the wave function (dynamical reduction models, GRW-like)
