World War II Overview

What happened? • The war went on between the two powers from 1939-1945. • Most fighting occurred in Africa, Europe and the Pacific. • The Axis powers were considered ‘fascist’, meaning that they thought they were a higher class of people.
The Holocaust • Perhaps the most disturbing and unbelievable part of WWII was the Holocaust. • The German Nazi government set up death-camps where Jews, intellectuals, gypsies etc were executed. • They were shot at first, but later gassed to death in purpose-built shower blocks.

How did it end? • Hitler suicided with a pistol in early ’45, and Germany was defeated, largely by Russia on the Eastern Front. • The USA controversially dropped two atomic bombs on Japan in late ’45 to knock them out of the war.
