Vase with a Navaho style body. Built with drape, coil and/or slab methods
Create a functional vase/bowl with a body in the Navaho style. • Vase/bowl will consist of three parts-bottom=drape slab or coil, body =coils and neck=slab. • Draw your vase body outline in your sketchbook. • Bottom can be a drape bowl, coils or a slab cylinder. Be sure if you are draping a bowl it is covered with cheesecloth/newspaper before draping slab over bowl. Remove when leatherhard and start to add coils. • Build body with coils that first slightly curve outward and than come back inward to create a narrow neck. Coils must be smoothed out. Smooth out coils when leatherhard with a rib tool. • Add neck with a slab that is curved into a cylinder.
Sgraffito- means to scratch in Italian. The application of a different color slip over a leatherhard piece. Let the slip get leatherhard and draw or “scratch” the slip away. Usually a red clay vessel and white slip application or the opposite.
You will use a sgraffitto technique on your vase. • Your vase will be painted with red slip and when leatherhard it will be scratched into. • You may use one underglaze color that is applied before you paint on the red slip.
Sgraffito design requirements • Design must contain lines • Design CANNOT contain symbols ( peace signs, hearts, etc.), no stick figures, no existing imagery (cartoons, etc. ). Original only. • Design can be abstract or image based. • Design must appear on all parts of the vessel-body and neck. • Design does NOT have to be Navaho themed.
