What is water harvesting? Water harvesting is the act of collecting water from nature itself and storing it so it can be used for alternative purposes. Water harvesting has the potential to be a great source of additional water to be used for irrigation and agricultural purposes around the world
Water Harvesting from the Bear Down Gym The mission is to harvest water from three buildings, Bear Down Gym, Main Library and Science Library. The collection of water will be stored in the Bear Down swimming pool. The water will be used for irrigation in the surrounding areas as needed.
Bear Down Gym • The roof area is 29,354 square feet. • Potentially harvest 25,500 cubic feet of water. • Potential Turf Area Supported is 7,300 square feet.
Main Library • The roof area is 66,457 square feet. • Potentially harvest 59,800 cubic feet annually. • Potential turf area supported is 16,614 square feet.
Science Library • The roof area is 24,688 square feet. • Potentially harvest 22,500 cubic feet of water. • Potentially water 6,200 square feet of turf.
Bear Down, Main Library, and Science Library • Total roof area for the three buildings is, 120,499 square feet. • The three buildings can potentially harvest 107,800 cubic feet annually. • The three buildings can potentially water 30,100 square feet of turf.
Bear Down Pool Storage The Bear Down Pool can store: 21,639 cubic feet from the Main Library 9,558 cubic feet from the Bear Down Gym +8,039 cubic feet from the Science Library 39,234cubic feet NO WAY, CAN’T FIT ALL THAT AGUA!! The pool can only hold 24,300 cubic feet of water. Can we fix this dilemma???? I sure hope so...
Fixing the Dilemma • The existing swimming pool is 75’ length by 60’ width by 5.4’ average depth. We recommend that the swimming pool be 75’x 60’x 10’. This new design would certainly hold (45,000 cubic feet) all the water capacity from the three buildings without any problems whatsoever.
