  1. Qualitative Data Questions from Reading Recovery teacher surveys What were the overall changes observed in the children participating in the program? What perceptions were expressed by parents of children participating? What are your thoughts on more students involved in the RR program if possible? How would you rate the program overall from 1-5? What if any, are other comments you might have on the program?

  2. #1 Observed Changes in Students? Teachers noted: increases in student confidence and self-esteem through success in RR ; increases in specific reading strategies initially lacking in beginning readers; greater participation in small group and large group participation by RR participants; skills acquired carrying forward after exit of RR by students; obvious progression toward next grade level equivalence.

  3. #2 What were parent comments? Parents noted students now reading at home Parents noted increase in students self-esteem – wanting to read to parents Parents were pleased with the 1:1 attention Parents asked repeatedly about possibility for RR to continue on to next grade level

  4. What are your thoughts on more students involved in the RR program if possible? Multiple responses indicating belief in effectiveness of program therefore more kids could benefit Multiple responses on RR training affecting regular class instruction Multiple comments about regret concerning students still waiting for the program

  5. RATE THE PROGRAM All Teachers participating in surveys rated the program as high as possible

Other Comments Comments indicate a strong belief in the effectiveness of the program and its positive impact on students Comments indicated some schools experienced more principal support than others Comments indicate a belief that more classroom teachers need to be trained in Reading Recovery Comments indicate a strong support bond among RR teachers and leaders Comments indicated a concern for the future as RR is dependent on state funds for current level of implementation
