What is Environmental Justice? • Environmental Justice (EJ) means that everyone has the right, regardless of their race, culture or income-level, to live in an environment that doesn’t make them sick. It also means that everyone has the right to be involved in environmental policy setting processes. • The EJ mission of EPA Region X is to achieve environmental protection for all, so that no segment of the population, regardless of race, ethnicity, or income bears a disproportionate burden of the effects of environmental pollution. Collaborative on Health and the Environment
CHE-WA EJ Working Group • Established in Spring 2004 • Emerged from the need to establish more dialog between the EJ and EH advocates • Rooted in addressing social justice and ethical principles Collaborative on Health and the Environment
Working Group Activities • Met to build allies across agencies and disciplines • Organized an evening forum to hear from community organizations which are engaged in achieving EJ • Determined the need for EJ guiding principles for environmental health and environmental policies Collaborative on Health and the Environment
The ideal EJ Process Who is producing the hazard? Establish a dialog between the decision makers, scientists, and the affected community. Empower community members to bring about change. Who is being exposed? Share information and decisions with all community members. Who are the decision makers? Collaborative on Health and the Environment
