  2. What is SHIIP?Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program, Department of Insurance • Statewide education and outreach program • Educates the public on senior health insurance issues • Helps Medicare recipients understand Medicare and choose the right plans based on their individual needs

  3. Extension’s Plan of Work • NC residents use life skills to create stable, safe and secure environments • Adults will develop & Strengthen critical life skills • North Carolinians will be civically engaged within their communities • Adults will address community issues and challenges through volunteerism

  4. Extension working with SHIIP in NC • 26 County SHIIP Programs coordinated by Extension Agents • 189 Volunteers recruited by Extension • Volunteers gave 5,604 hours • 5,089 Medicare Recipients were counseled

  5. SHIIP Funding • Mini-Grants Available to SHIIP Coordinating Sites • $5,000 in 2008 • $4,200 in 2009

  6. Funding Criteria • 1) Hold regular (weekly) counseling clinic during the period 10/2008 through 3/2009, • 2) coordinate a county volunteer recognition event during the period 9/1/2008 – 10/31/2008, • 3) hold a “Community Superstars” meeting during the contracted period, • 4) expand Lower Income Subsidy (LIS) outreach and enrollment in the county. This grant requires $1200.00 be spent for LIS efforts and reflected separately in the Budget Attachment II, and • 5) attendance at the SHIIP Coordinators’ Training Conference on August 21 and 22, 2008 is mandatory for all coordinators.

  8. Stanly County SHIIP • Collaborative effort with Seniors Services & Information Technology Depts. and Volunteers • 350 Medicare recipients counseled in 2008 – savings to Stanly County residents $540,778.70
