  1. Crisis Care Ministry Role-play Exercises Presenter: Dr. Doc R. Williams

Administrative Directions The purpose of the role-play exercise is to foster effective communication & facilitate pastoral associates becoming a part of the Phoebe Care-giving Team to provide quality patient care. • Phoebe Nurses & Phoebe Operators are invited to participate & work together with pastoral associates to “solve” the scenarios provided for team collaboration. • Phoebe Nurses will be familiar with hospital policies and procedures, and understand that the goal is to foster teamwork with the new pastoral associates. • Two Role-play exercises will be provided for team participant information.

  3. Role-play Guidelines Nurse , Operator & Chaplain: Follow Guidelines for situational clarification by asking, • Who? Patient &/or family involvement • When? Time crisis/emergency realized • Where? Patient location in hospital • What? Have patient define crisis/emergency • Medical, Psychological &/or Spiritual issue • What does patient need from chaplain? What is patient’s faith background (Baptist, Pentecostal, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, etc.)? Has Faith Practitioner been called? • Is this a crisis/emergency? Do you need to see the chaplain NOW or later (How much?)?

  4. Role-play Scenario It is Sunday - A patient at Phoebe Hospital has requested a chaplain be called to her/his bedside. The patient has indicated that the situation is urgent. The nurse makes contact with the Phoebe operator asking that the On-call chaplain be contacted to help a patient with an urgent need . The operator makes contact with the On-call chaplain to relay the urgent request for support. NOTE: Follow the guidelines provided to help you clarify the patient request to assess the urgency of chaplain response.

  5. Role-play Scenario 1 Patient: I have been very sick for weeks. My Dr. finally admitted me to the hospital for tests. Yesterday she informed me that I have stage #4 liver cancer and must receive chemo and radiation treatments beginning next week. I have been away from my church for about 20 years. I am Roman Catholic and feel I need to make things right with God and the church. I also want to receive Last Rites just in case I don’t make it. My family is coming in on Monday. I really need some spiritual advice to determine what I need to do and when. Please contact the chaplain for me.

  6. Role-play Scenario 2 Patient: It is Sunday morning. This is my first time being admitted to the hospital. I have been having severe low abdominal pain. The Dr. told me that I have more than one large kidney stone that is causing my pain. I have begun to recount my life and realize I am a sinner in desperate need of a right relationship with God. I want to talk with a chaplain about my spiritual condition. My background is Church of God but I have never really been saved. I need to do this as soon as possible but I need someone to help me. I also need a Bible and a devotional. Please contact the chaplain for me ASAP to help me accept Jesus as my Savior.

  7. Role-play Scenario 3 Patient: It is Sunday morning. I brought my three year old son to the hospital with flu-like symptoms. I brought him to the ER last week on Friday. I have been treating him with a prescription medication given at that time. Just as the nurses and Dr.’s were taking him in he stopped breathing and a Code Blue was called. They worked on my child for over an hour but were unable to revive him. The Dr. just came out of the room to tell me that my son is dead. My three year old son is dead! This is impossible! He was so full of life! What do you mean he is gone – dead! I must call somebody. NOTE: This 26 year old white female came to the hospital all by herself. The attending nurse issued a call to contact family members and for the On-call chaplain to respond ASAP.
