Sheffield Kidney Institute • Two haemodialysis wards at main unit based at Northern General Hospital dialysing 280 patients • Satellites - Chesterfield, Barnsley, Heeley (south Sheffield) & Rotherham dialysing 280 patients
Transport contract held by acute trusts initially & now with PCT’s • Dialysis transport included in the overall trust transport contract • Transport providers – Yorkshire Ambulance Service for South Yorkshire Patients, East Midlands Ambulance Service for Derbyshire & North Nottinghamshire patients, City taxis for Heeley satellite
Issues facing units • Increasing patient numbers • Changing mobility & dependency of patients- increased need for 2 man ambulance • Flexibility within unit schedules • Timeliness of arrival & departure • Communication with transport providers • Patient complaints
Heeley satellite • Opened in late 2007 • Contract with local taxi company- City taxis • Flexibility • Mobility
Barnsley Satellite • Pilot for Personal Health Budgets • 5 patients with ongoing recruitment of further patients
Future • Separate transport contract for South Yorkshire Haemodialysis patients from 1st July 2011 • Derbyshire County PCT going out to tender later in 2011 • Personal Health Budgets
