What do these terms mean? • Indecipherability: not understandable; incomprehensible. • Archaic: words or phrases that are not used as much as they used to be • Archaic Language: a language that is no longer used or not used as much
Why are Archaic Languages Usually Indercipherable? • Some of these languages are so old that they have become almost indecipherable • Also, through language changes (Old--Middle--Modern) • In some cases, these languages are still studied, but they are not spoken on a regular basis
Examples of Archaic Languages: • Old and Middle Dutch • Ottoman Empire Turkish (very close to Persian and Arabic) • Lithuanian • Latvian • Eastern Germanic Languages
