Vietnam Case & Huong River • The biggest river basin situated in Thua Thien Hue province – Central VN • 104 m long, width varies from parts to parts. The average width is 44 m . Total area is 2.830 km2 • Steep flow from the mountain, city, down to the lagoon and the sea
Results of Vietnam case • CSRD has been increasingly recognised by others as a relevant organisation working on climate change and community based adaptation
Study done to find Current & planned measures Middle stream : + Changing crop pattern + Building safer house + Teaching children swimming + Upgrading sewage system • Upper stream: + Well covering the tree feet, using compost. + Better cages, better care for animals. + Wild forest in watershed to get more water source. + Planting for shadow and anti erosion + Public shelter, safer house + Awareness raising Lower stream: + Growing mangrove to protect from wind and waves + Building rain water collection and filter system + Digging pond to have water from sand dune + Upgrading warning system + Enhancing techniques for shrimp raising. + Awareness raising on environment
Action Plan approved 24 August by the chairman of the province
Manuals of local knowledge on adaptation Safer house Rain water collection Protecting house Thespesia populnea
Mangrove as an adaptation measure Mangrove at 27 Sep.2011
Added Value of ADAPTs Vietnam • Integrate the findings of the ADAPTS case study into provincial policies (Other projects don’t do this) • Develop local actionwith high participation of community, high commitment of local authorities and NGO (other projects may also plant mangrove, but not participatory) • Promote local initiative and knowledge in term of cc adaptation (other projects promote the measures/ models designed by scientists) • Network NGOs and other actors in adaptation efforts
Success and Lessons learnt from the project • The project has gained support from stakeholders (community, local governments, ….) . This leads to high commitment and sustainability.
A platform for CC network in Central Vietnam is created but has not developed well , CSRD wants to continue to strengthen this network via Vietnam Rivers Network
CSRD’s approach • Community based and local knowledge promotion in cc adaptation • Focus on soft measures (education, awareness raising, gender, institutional strengthening and networking, local planning) • Prioritise water related issues and solutions
