Introducing… The OAPT Photo Contest for World Year of Physics created by Alan J. Hirsch
OAPT Physics Photo Contest • For Grade 12 Ontario Physics Students • 2 Categories (12C and 12U) • Created and sponsored by Alan Hirsch
For 12C’s - Physics in Action • Theme changes each year • 2005 Motion/Forces and/or Machines • Submit Photo(s) plus explanation
Motion: time-exposure photo with an exposure time of 1/10th of a second and an aperture value of 32. The result shows that the cars in the express lanes are travelling faster than the cars in the service lanes, as seen by comparing the two cars in the foreground.
Submit series of 2 or 3 photos plus explanation Polarization Interference Depth of Field Shutter Speed Film speed For 12U’s - Controlling Photographing Variables
Polarization: Maximum reflected light absorbed when polarizing crystals aligned vertically
The photo with the shallow depth of field was taken at a wide open aperture of f: 4.5 at 1/500th of a second. The depth of field ranges from about 0.6 m to 1.2 m. Much of the image is blurred because the aberration caused by using the outer circumference of the lens. The photo with the larger depth of field was taken with a smaller aperture of f: 11 at 1/100th of a second. The depth of field ranges from about 0.4 m to 4 m. The image is much less blurry because there is less aberration when only the centre portion of the lens is used.
Coordination of Contest • Diana Hall will coordinate • Photos will be sent to Bell H.S.
Judging • Preliminary selection will be done by committee. Top ~40 selected. • Final judging will be done at OAPT annual meeting (Format TBA) • Prizes awarded before end of school year • Final decisions made by Alan Hirsch
Prizes for Winners • 1st Place in Each Category - $200 • 2nd Place in Each Category - $100 • 3rd Place in Each Category - $50 • Plus Honourable Mention • Certificates for all winners and HM Prizes provided by Alan Hirsch
