Labours Victory in 1945 The rejection of the Conservatives and Churchill
Learning objectives In this lesson you will learn about • Why Labour won the 1945 General Election • Making inferences from the sources
Background • May 1945 – Germany was defeated • Britain had been ruled by a National Government made up of ministers from all three parties throughout the war • Still fighting with Japan • People started to think about the future and how not to make the mistakes that were made after the end of WW1
Calling an election • Churchill and Atlee – the leader of the Labour party wanted the coalition to continue until Japan was defeated • The Labour Party did not and withdrew • Churchill resigned on the 23rd May – an election was called for the 5th July
The election campaign • Conservatives campaign concentrated on Churchill • “Let him finish the job” • Promised homes and jobs but they had done this after WW1 but not delivered • First broadcast – said that Labour would introduce a Gestapo – comparing them to the Nazis • Big mistake
The result • Conservative campaign never recovered • Misjudged the mood of the country • Election – 5th July • Results not announced until the 26th July to allow soldiers abroad to vot as well • A huge Labour victory – won 393 seats compared to the Conservatives 197 • Atlee became Prime Minister
The Beveridge Report • During the war Ernest Bevin (Minister of Labour) commissioned a report to show how conditions could be improved after the war • Chaired by William Beveridge – published on 1st December 1942 • Conservatives hated it – sold over 70 000 copies in the first week
Its recommendations • State should support its citizens “from the cradle to the grave” • Five basic rights – fighting the five giants • Want – the basic lack of needs like food • Ignorance – lack of proper education for all • Disease – lack of proper medical care for all • Idleness - unemployment
The reaction to it • Govt took control of more parts of live during the war • Showed that govt could be a force for changing lives • Even Conservative MPs could see that things would be different after the war • People looked forward to a new beginning after the war
