  2. Walking to School • Imagine walking over 6 km to school every day… • Shoes are often required for school attendance in many countries. • Increase attendance by as much as 62%. • Education is key to ending poverty.

  4. Open Sewers • Indeveloping countries, over 80 percent of sewage is discharged untreated polluting lakes, rivers and coastal areas.

  5. Fresh Water

  6. The Walk For Water • Two out of three people in Africa must leave their home for drinkable water. • Women and children are known to be the main water carriers in low-income countries, often spending more than one hour per water collection trip and making multiple trips per day. • The average distance to fresh water in a developing country is 3.7 miles! • No Shoes…

  8. Agriculture • Agriculture employs 65 percent of Africa’s labor force.

  9. Podoconiosis • Countries in Africa, Central America, and Asia. • Countries both have volcanic pasts and are in Rural locations,devoted to farming. • Over four million are effected worldwide (many working as barefoot farmers in the irritant mineral red clay) • When farmers repetitively work on the soil every day with no protection, inflammation begins within the lymph system in the leg. Then, foot swelling follows and eventually, elephantitis.

  11. Results of Podoconiosis • Children precluded from attending school • Excluded from a community's social and religious events • Inhibits opportunities of building a family and contributing in their community • The superstition causes family and friends to end relationships.

Hookworm • Hookworm is a parasite, meaning it lives off other living things. • Infects 1 in 4 people in the world. • Developing nations in the tropics and subtropics as a result of faulty sanitation. • abdominal pain, cramps, fever, nausea, appetite loss and itchy rashes. • Hookworm causes intrauterine growth restriction, prematurity, and low birth weight in newborns. • Slow growth and mental development from losing a lot of iron and protein.

  13. Schistosomiasis • Affects 200 million people worldwide and its highest prevalence is in school-aged children. Infection occurs when skin comes in contact with contaminated water, allowing the worms to enter the skin. • Infection can cause anemia, malnutrition, and learning difficulties.

  14. But what can we do to prevent this? It’s simple! Giving one single person a pair of shoes and proper sanitation will change their life forever. Education Health Confidence
