  1. Briefing Agenda • A Reengineered Organization • Unparalleled Emphasis on Teamwork • Team Building • Continuous Learning Environment • Flexibility and Adaptability • Importance of Telecommuting

  2. A Reengineered Organization • What is a reengineered organization? • Process centered and not organized around product • An environment of professionals and coaches, process owners and results-based pay • Boundaryless organization and an institutionalized capacity for change • A flatter, non-hierarchical staff with wide open career opportunities but no set career path

  3. A Reengineered Organization • A successful reengineered company requires a management commitment to: • Individual empowerment • Self-directed work teams • Pursuit of common goals understood by all • Requirement to look at work with a different perspective (Out-Of-The-Box Thinking) • Universal access to the Executive Director

  4. Reengineered Organization • The typical employee has: • A strong drive to succeed (goal oriented) • A positive attitude • The desire to grow/develop skills & knowledge • Effective communication skills • The ability to see the big picture • The ability to think and question • The ability to see what needs to be done and the desire to accomplish it regardless

  5. Emphasis on Teamwork • We are a matrix organization of 100 people with over 350 project teams • Every employee has a functional process “home” and is “loaned” out to multiple project teams • Teams are guided by a hierarchical goal structure stemming from the Strategic Operating Plan

  6. Teamwork • The teams sink or swim together • Individuals share roles and therefore must have a broad understanding for what is going on • Good people have failed because they underestimated the value of being a team player

  7. Teamwork • Project team leads and the senior management of the Institute have the authority and responsibility for successfully pursuing annual goals and maintaining a motivated workforce through unusual (but highly effective) incentive programs

  8. Teamwork • A highly charged quarterly awards ceremony takes place to honor those who have contributed through financial performance, creativity, productivity, or quality • Process and project teams offer various motivational awards (E-Award, Ketchup Award, Marvin Award, On-The-Spot, etc.)

  9. Team Building • The employee base is a close-knit group with non-company sponsored socializing taking place on a regular basis • Teams attend needed training together • Teams attend active participation events together (basketball, paintball, softball, bowling, walking group) • An annual trip to a dude ranch has been extremely effective

  10. Continuous Learning Environment • We strive to continuously improve our knowledge base • We are never satisfied with our current skills and abilities • We employee a high percentage of generalists and few specialists • The generalists are used as utility infielders

  11. Continuous Learning Environment • Providing liberal training policies has proven to: • Increase retention rates among employees as they are not “stuck in a dead end job” • Enhance attitude, skills, behavior, and knowledge of almost every employee • Regular “coaching” or sharing of information between employees

  12. Continuous Learning Environment • A hierarchical career ladder is not present, but opportunity abounds • Each employee can carve out the niche that is right for him/her without being stereotyped into a role • Each employee is utilized to provide maximum return for the company • Several career opportunity success stories have emerged

  13. Flexibility and Adaptability • We search for ways to increase efficiency in all we do • We understand the process is not the end, but rather a means to an end • We continuously monitor our heading and adjust accordingly as the wind blows us off course • We provide flexible work times and places

  14. Telecommuting • Each employee has the opportunity to telecommute for special projects • This results in a more productive work day, reduced commuting times and an office space saving plus the savings in productivity and increased morale
