Approaches for Addressing Sexual Identity and Gender Variance in the Secondary English/Language Arts Classroom An examination of English Journal, 1969-1990Kate Ondrof, EnglishFaculty Mentor: Dr. Emily Meixner Abstract We have been researching historical trends in LGBTQ pedagogy. We will be focusing our attention specifically on English Journal, the premiere publication by the National Council of Teachers of English for secondary English teachers, from 1969-present. Through our research, we sought to identify: (1) the number of articles on LGBTQ students, teachers, and pedagogy published during this forty year period, (2) the instructional strategies introduced and recommended to secondary (middle and high school) ELA teachers, and (3) the various LGBTQ texts recommended, cited, or incorporated into secondary ELA curricula.
