NEPTUNE The giant blue planet by: Nick Conforti
DISCOVERY • John Couch Adams and Jean Leverring were the first to solve the planetary math problem • People predict Neptune’s existence after Uranus's discovery • In1989 a spaceship got its first ever close up look • Voyager 2 blasted of in1927 it traveled 12 years to reach Neptune
EXPLORATION • Voyager 2 was the only spacecraft to visit Neptune • Voyager 2 was not supposed to go to Neptune it was supposed to go to Jupiter and Saturn • Voyager 2 blasted of in 1977 it traveled 12 years to reach Neptune
GREAT DARK SPOT • Has two dark storms spots that resemble Jupiter's great red spot
TRITON • Neptune’s largest moon • Circles Neptune in opposite direction its called retro grade • Coldest moon in solar system • In 1949 American astronaut Gerald Kuiper • Captured by Neptune’s gravitational pull and became a moon • Its surface proved it was hotter a long time ago • Volcano cover Triton but don’t shoot out lava they shoot out nitrogen gas particles
RINGS • 6 rings • Very narrow and very faint • Made of countless tiny dust particles revolving around the planet
ASTROPHERE/GRAVITY • Astrosphere is very thick and goes deep into the planet • Astrosphere is made of mostly hydrogen and helium • Gravity is actually pulling its largest moon
ABOUT NEPTUNE(1) • Is bigger than earth • If you weigh 100 pounds on earth you would weigh 110 pounds on Neptune • 8th planet from sun (farthest) but Pluto was from 1930-2006 • Rotates eastward once every 16 hours and 3 minutes • Looks blue because it has a gas called methane in its astrosphere • Moons are named after characters from Roman and Greek myths
ABOUT NEPTUNE(2) • Named after Roman gods of sea • Perhaps people choose the name Neptune from the color of the ocean
FUNFACTS • Volume-58 earths • Temptature -353 degrees Fahrenheit • Day length-16 hours 7 minutes • You can’t see Neptune with a naked eye or with a telescope • Is about 2.8 billion miles from sun
