Griffin consulted a skin specialist on how to darken his skin and had his hair cut short and blackened. He went to the South. He did not say he was a white or a Negro. Immediately he found problems getting living quarters and a job despite his good education. Some Southern Negroes he met took him for a Northern Negro and gave him advice on how to get on in the South.
