Keys to Academic Excellence Michael Holsapple mholsapple@ivytech.edu
Prologue I am here to recruit you! I would like to first thank you for sharing your time and attention. I believe, and recently re-stocked that belief at our Academy of Instructional Excellence, that teachers learn best from teachers. Indeed, that notion is the cornerstone of the Academy of Instructional Excellence program, securely resting on a proverbial yellow brick from the Land of Oz – the one inscribed with the words “there is no place like home.” It is nice to be home again, among the family of Ivy Tech Community College teachers and to be here at this educational conference. And it is immensely valuable to be freshly re-educated to a fundamental truth: both our best and most abundant resource are ourselves. So, again, thank you. I am here to recruit you to an additional fundamental truth. Paraphrasing educator Paulo Freire, education is not neutral. One way or another, intentionally or otherwise, education is value-laden. Keys to Academic Excellence
The proposition advanced here is that academic excellence must be valued by all, for all, in our college educational culture. The issue, then, is how to best construct that culture. How about story boarding, wall posters, bookmarks – how about creation and distribution of “gold keys” to unlock the treasure trove of academic excellence? Thus, the origin of this project “Keys to Academic Excellence.” Your author (), self-styled cub-reporter-Gonzo journalist, and newly volunteered faculty advisor to our two-year college honor society-Phi Theta Kappa, selected notable quotes from some select famous folks and constructed these aphorisms into discussion point propositions representing “Keys to Academic Excellence.” Friends and colleagues were interviewed to further develop the project with additional “Keys” to unlock the virtual vault guarding our valued academic excellence. This story boarding project yielded, through incredible cooperation with our marketing department, wall posters and bookmarks displayed and distributed at our campus to begin a high-visibility promotion of a culture of academic excellence. You are invited and encouraged to join this project, to practice a philosophy of expressly stated and shared-value education, and to continue to produce and distribute the incredible wealth of our collegial expertise. I am here to recruit you. Tag, you’re it! ☻
Teachers Of The World Unite! Fundamentally, we all know what the three “Rs” of education are, right? Or do we? • Really, what do you teach? • Really, why do you teach? • Really, how do you teach?
You’ve heard the expression, “80 % of success is just showing up.” Well, you wouldn’t have heard it had you not been present. Admittedly, somewhat existential, huh?
Think of it like this, champions don’t happen by accident. It is all about work ethic… work hard, work smart …be a champion!
All bedtime stories and true-life tales of success share a common beginning… Onceupon a time when times were hard…
It is true, not all our dreams come true. But none can come true if not first dreamed. Think about it; no, dream about it!
Life, in all its glorious splendor, is a shared experience. Please, share.
Action is a predicate for accomplishment. Enough said. Get it?
I am blessed, truly. I have been around the world, all the while sitting comfortably in my reading chair. Wow.
Cooperation is a glue that binds individuals to better outcomes. Come on, stick together.

The shortest distance between you and success is attended by unanticipated, but necessary detours. My cautionary advice is that somewhere along your journey, you’re likely to lose your keys… mh, 04/03/09
