Taming the “To-Do” List • Task management – keeping track of tasks you need and want to accomplish and making sure you complete them • Responsibility – a task you are required to do
Make a “To-Do” List • Helps you keep track of your responsibilities and goals • Some people use electronic calendars and trackers, and some use paper • Some people update it daily or weekly • You can organize your tasks into categories (school, work, home, etc)
Establish Priorities • Record deadlines • Rank items on list in order of importance • Separate tasks that must be done, should be done, and you want to be done
Plan your Schedule • Use a calendar to keep track of things that must happen at specific times • Plan specific times to do tasks • Set reminders if you are using a device that has the capability
Use Time Wisely • Identify personal traps • Do you spend too much time talking, texting, playing games, surfing internet, etc? • Is it interfering with your ability to get things done?
Time traps to avoid • Procrastination • Do unpleasant tasks first • Do your bet to avoid distractions • Set up a schedule • Take a small step to get started • Overscheduling • - trying to accomplish too many things in a limited amount of time • Learn to say no… “I’m sorry, but I just cannot take on another responsibility right now”
Time-Tested Strategies • Be prepared and oraganized • Allow enough time • Dovetail activities • Be realistic • Be flexible
Time Management Activity • How many hours per week do you spend: • In class • Homework • Screen time • Socializing • Sleeping • Eating • Working • Household chores • Driving • Sports and other activities
Personal Time Management Assignment • List 3 goals you would like to achieve this week. • List any activities that you must participate in during the week. (e.g., sports teams, youth group, etc…) • List any duties or obligations (needs) that you have during the week. (e.g., appointments, work, chores, etc…) • Do you have anything you want to do this week? Plan for activities with your family, friends. (e.g., movies, shopping, etc…) • Using the information listed above, create a weekly planner, and a weekly homework chart. Don’t forget, you must include things like school, sleeping and eating into your schedule.
