Have you thought of, are you planning to, or are you continuing in full-time studies in a graduate studies program next year at an eligible Ontario university? OGS is an external funding opportunity for you! The OGS program is designed to encourage excellence in graduate studies at the master’s and doctoral levels. Value: $15,000 per year ($5000 per session) An OGS is awarded for one academic year, which may consist of two or three consecutive terms. One-term awards are not granted. Thus, you may receive $10,000 for two consecutive terms or $15,000 for three consecutive terms. The province of Ontario contributes two-thirds of this amount and the university provides one-third. UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIP An Excellence Scholarship equivalent to tuition fees is awarded to recipients of SSHRC award excluding recipients in a graduate program at the Telfer School of Management*. • It is valid for each session you are awarded an external scholarship • If you were awarded an Admission Scholarship it will be replaced by the Excellence Scholarship • The Admission Scholarship will be reinstated at the end of the Excellence Scholarship if there are any remaining eligible sessions of the Admission Scholarship • This scholarship does not include any TA’s, RA’s or annual cash payment * Please contact the FGPS or the Telfer School of Management for details Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies
Eligible to apply for an Ontario Graduate Scholarship if: • Applicant plans to be enrolled full-time in an eligible program leading to a master’s or doctoral degree at an eligible institution in Ontario. Note: Students who are unable to study full-time due to a disability are eligible to apply for and hold an OGS award. These students must meet all eligibility requirements and conditions. • Applicant is a Canadian citizen, Protected Person, or Permanent Resident or has received a temporary resident visa as a member of the student class under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada). If applicable, the date on the Protected Person, Permanent Resident, or Temporary Resident Visa Student Class documentation can be no later than November 19, 2008. Note: Applicant is not eligible for an OGS if he or she is a refugee claimant and does not have a Temporary Resident Visa Student Class. Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies
Applicants may not be considered for an OGS if: • Have been convicted of an offence under the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities Act, the Canada Student Loans Act, or the Canada Student Financial Assistance Act. • Have been convicted of an offence under the Criminal Code (Canada) involving fraud or theft in respect of any student assistance program or a loan grant, or award made by the Government of Ontario, the Government of Canada or the government of any other province or territory of Canada. In addition to basic eligibility criteria, there are minimum academic standards that must be met before an application can be considered for an OGS. MINIMUM OGS ACADEMIC STANDARDS If master’s or doctoral degree marks used for calculating an applicant’s GPA are not available (e.g. courses were graded on a pass-fail basis), then the last 20 one-term/semester (60 credits) most recently available undergraduate/graduate marks to calculate an applicant’s GPA. The following conditions may affect your eligibility for an OGS award • You can receive a lifetime maximum of four years of government-funded student awards. This maximum includes awards offered by the following agencies:- the Ontario government, through the Ontario Graduate Scholarship Program,- the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC),- the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC),- the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) (formerly the Medical Research Council). • You cannot hold a scholarship from SSHRC, NSERC, or the CIHR, or an Ontario Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (OGSST) at the same time as an OGS. • You can receive up to two OGS awards at the master’s level. The award is tenable during either one or both of the first two academic years (12-month periods) of a master’s degree program, but not after the second year. • You can receive up to four OGS awards at the doctoral level. The awards are tenable during any of the first five academic years (12-month periods) of a doctoral program, but not after the fifth year. Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies
Application Procedures There are specific application procedures that you must follow depending on whether or not you are currently enrolled at the University of Ottawa. It is extremely important that you follow the appropriate procedures otherwise your application will be delayed and/or not included in the competition. In addition, you must ensure that all supporting documentation (e.g., Statement of Interest or Plan of Study, etc) are included in your OGS Application Package. First Steps • Introduce yourself to the academic assistant who will oversee the OGS applications in your program/unit and advise them that your application will be placed with them. • Order all of your university transcripts and have them sent to the academic assistant of your program no later than the Oct. 3rd, 2008 deadline. If you are a University of Ottawa student or alumni you do not need to pay for your University of Ottawa transcript, please have your academic assistant order your UO transcript.Please do not order your UO transcript. • Find 2 professors who will each write an Academic Assessement Report on your behalf, and have each of them send their sealed Report to the academic assistant by the Oct. 3rd, 2008 deadline. The following documents must be submitted to your graduate program or department by the deadline of October 3rd for your application to be considered complete: • Page 1 - Personal Data - completed and signed by student • Page 2 - Education Information - completed and signed by student • Page 3 - Additional Education Information (if applicable) • Page 4 - Notice, Consent, Declaration and Signature page of Applicant • Change Form (if applicable) – available at your academic unit • Student Checklist - completed and signed by student • Study Permit/Authorization - (if applicable for International Students) • Summary Sheet - items 5-10 completed and signed by student • Academic Assessment Report - completed and signed by Referee • Attachment to the Academic Assessment Report , if provided - completed and signed by Referee • Academic Assessment Report - completed and signed by Referee • Attachment to the Academic Assessment Report , if provided - completed and signed by Referee • Official/original University transcripts, undergraduate and graduate (if applicable) • Statement of Interest or Plan of Study • List of Significant Academic Accomplishments • List of Scholarships or Awards Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies
Please Keep In Mind • When completing the Education section of the application form, you must use the discipline names and codes listed on the OGS web site under Divisions and Disciplines. • The ministry no longer accepts faxed copies of reference letters. • Please feel free to use the templates available for your Statement of Interest or Plan of Study, List of Academic Accomplishments, List of Scholarships and Awards, Change Form (links are all indicated on the previous slide). You are only allowed one page for each of these free forms. • Do not include a résumé/ curriculum vitae in your OGS application package • Bibliography or references may be included onlyon either the Plan of Study or Statement of Interest page. Also keep in Mind • You may add a maximum of 100 words at the end of the Academic Accomplishments page to describe any special considerations such as health problems, family responsibilities, disabilities or other circumstances that have had an effect on your performance or productivity, including any delays in disseminating research results or completing a degree. The weight to be given to any special circumstances will be determined by the OGS panels evaluating the application. • OGS requires official/original transcripts for all studies done in Canadian and American Universities. No certified photocopies, no registration summaries, no academic records, no Web print-outs will be accepted. Remember you do not need to pay for your UO transcript, please have your academic assistant order your UO transcript. • Publications must be included on the List of Significant Academic Accomplishments page only.
