  1. ACCESS HE Reproduction. Foetal Development.

  2. Pregnancy. • Pregnancy lasts for 40 weeks. • The developing baby is called an embryo until the 8th week of pregnancy. • From 8 weeks until birth the unborn baby is called a foetus. • The baby receives all nutrients via the placenta. • All waste products are removed via the placenta. • The following details refer to the end of that month.

  3. Month 1. • Size: 0.6cm (3/16 in). • No eyes, nose or ears. • Backbone and vertebral canal form. • Small buds form that will develop into arms and legs. • The heart forms and starts to beat. • Body systems start to form. • Central nervous system appears at the start of the thirs week.

  4. Month 2. • Size: 3cm (11/4 in). • Weight: 1g (1/30oz). • Eyes far apart, eyelids fused, nose flat. • Bones begin to form (ossification). • Limbs can be identified as arms and legs. • Fingers and toes (digits) well formed. • Major blood vessels form. • Many internal organs continue to develop.

  5. Month 3. • Size: 7.5cm (3in). • Weight: 30g (10z) • Eyes almost fully developed, eyelids fused. • Bridge of nose develops. • External ears present. • Ossification continues. • Limbs fully formed and nais develop. • Heart beat can be detected. • Urine starts to form. • Foetus begins to move (mum cannot feel it yet). • Body systems continue to develop.

  6. Month 4. • Size: 18cm (6-7in). • Weight: 100g (40z). • Head large in proportion to rest of body. • Face takes on human features. • Hair appears on head. • Skin is bright pink. • Many bones ossified and joints begin to form. • Rapid development of body systems.

  7. Month 5. • Size: 25-30cm (10-12in). • Weight: 200-450g (1/2-1 lb). • Size of head more in proportion to rest of body. • Body covered by fine hair (lanugo). • Skin still bright pink. • Brown fat forms and heat is produced. (Brown fat is found in adipose tissue. It is a rich source of energy that can be converted rapidly into heat. The bulk of adipose tissue is white fat). • Foetal movements (quickening) now felt by mum. • Rapid developments of body systems.

  8. Month 6. • Size: 27-35cm (11-14in). • Weight: 550-800g (11/4-11/2 lb). • Head becomes even more in proportion. • Eyelids separate and eyelashes form. • Substantial weight gain. • Skin wrinkled and pink. • Surfactant (wetting agent) produced in lungs.

  9. Month 7. • Size: 32-42cm (13-17in). • Weight: 1100-1350g (21/2-3lb). • Head and body more in proportion. • Skin wrinkled and pink. • Until recently a foetus was not considered viable (capable of survival) until this stage. • Foetus assumes and upside down position.

  10. Month 8. • Size: 41-45cm (161/2-18in). • Weight: 2000-2300g ((41/2-5lb). • Subcutaneous fat deposited (under the skin). • Skin less wrinkled. • Testes descend into scrotum. • Bones of head are soft. • Chances of survival much greater.

  11. Month 9. • Size: 50cm (20in). • Weight: 3200-3400g (7-71/2lb). • More subcutaneous fat accumulates. • Lanugo sheds.11 • Nails grow to tips of fingers (or beyond).

  12. Parturition. • Baby is born. • A set of reflexes occur. • Baby takes first breath. • This causes the holes in the heart to close. • The lungs start to work. • Every new baby is a miracle!
