PRETTY WOMAN A critical analysis of key controversial themes in Pretty Woman I’ve decided to analyse this particular clip taken from the film Pretty Woman. I’ve decided to critically analyse this image as I think it shows the controversial key themes such as Drugs, Wealth, Value, Power, Feminism, Class, and prejudice within the romantic comedy. I think it’s important to look at the equality of women’s rights and powers and analyse how women are degraded within the hierarchy of society and how women are portrayed as a sex gender in the film. I will look at feminist ideas and how Julia Roberts performs using these ideas and how the issues are formed within society through social class, looking at Marxist theory of social class and how this creates another key theme of prejudice within the film. I will also look at Bell Hook’s (Feminist) and her ideas on what needs to be changed to make women and men equal. “Acknowledge each other’s differences but respect one another.” I hope from my findings I will give a thorough analysis of the key themes, showing understanding of my findings and showing clear representation of how women in the 1980’s were degraded due to their gender. Concluding in my opinion on how society has changed from the 1980’s, allowing equal rights and opportunities for both men and women to aspire to be as successful as one another’s gender.
