Mobile TV Jian Huang Seminar of CSCE 5520: Wireless Networks Dept of Computer Science and Engineering University of North Texas
Outline • Introduction • Challenge • Network Architecture • Standards • Application Example • Main Concerns • Conclusion
Future Market • 2007 – 2009 Mobile TV will begin commercial service in earnest • 2010 70 million TV-enabled phones worldwide
Contents and locations • Sports • News • Weather • Music • Major events • Dentists waiting lounge • Bedroom • Bus-stop • Outside in parks
Mobile Service Features • Return channel • Service portal (EPG,ESG) • Control of the terminal specifications and distribution • End-user knowledge and technical expertise in network provisioning
Challenge • 2G networks: 14 Kbps • 3G networks: 2 Mbps • Mobile TV: 300 Kbps
Two mobile-TV approaches • Cellular approaches Using existing 3G cellular networks Unicast (user limits, overwhelm) Multimedia Broadcast and Multicast Services standard (MBMS) TDtv
Two mobile-TV approaches • Dedicated networks New infrastructure Not constraint other mobile services DVB-H (digital video broadcasting) DMB (digital mobile broadcast) MeidaFLO (Media forward link only) ISDB-T (Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting-Terrestrial)
Standard: MBMS (Multimedia Broadcast and Multicast Service) • Use 3G/UMTS architecture • Eliminate new hardware for networks • Impact other services • Two mode: broadcast, multicast • Suited for small, less complex multimedia
Standard: TDtv • IPWireless, T-mobile, Sprint, Orange • Licensed spectrum • Unpaired spectrum • 5 MHz: 5 Mbps • 10 MHz: 9.7 Mbps
Concept: OFDM • Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing • Split signal into multiple sets • Modulating each onto a different subcarrier (spaced orthogonally) • Transmitted simultaneously without interference
Standard: DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcast - Handheld) • Planning in German • Extension of DVB-T • OFDM • MPEG-4 advanced video coding (AVC) • High efficiency advanced audio coding (AAC) • Resolutions: 176*144 to 2048*1024 • Frame rate: 15 to 30 fps • Data rate: 128 Kbps to 20 Mbps
Standard: DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) • Used in South Korea, France (LG, Samsung) • Terrestrial DMB OFDM VHF channels 8 (180 to 186 MHz) and 12 (204 to 210 MHz) • Satellite DMB CDMA UHF (2630 to 2655 MHz)
Standard: MediaFLO (Forward link only) • QUALCOMM (Verizon, LG, Sanyo) • OFDM • Digital-TV transmitter to send MediaFLO waveform • MPEG4 AVC and ACC codecs • UHF channel 55 (716 to 722 MHz) • Data rate: 11 Mbps • Frame rate: 30 fps
ISDB-T • A satellite-to-tower system similar to DVB-T • Used in Japan
Application example: Nokia N92 • DVB-H receiver (470-750MHz) • Video / Audio codecs: H.264 AVC 384kbps@QVGA 15fps/QCIF 30fps and AAC up to 128 kbps) • Mobile TV application for selection, purchase, consumption, and storage of TV programs • Support for interactive services • Mobile TV electronic service guide • Channel and content protection: OMA DRM 2.0, IPSec rel. w IPv6, IPv6 scalable multicast • Large, 2.8" up to 16 million color display (QVGA 320 x 240 resolution) • Fold, twist, and stand design and dedicated media keys • Up to 5 hours watch time, stereo speakers, memory card support up to 2GB • $799.99
Main Concerns • Standards • Allocation of frequency spectrum • DRM and business/revenue models • Infrastructure improvements • Quality of service • Handset cost • Handset performance/battery life
Conclusion • “Killer application” • Balance the practical concerns: hybrid network architecture • Unified standard
Quiz • What’s the difference of unicast distribution and broadcast distribution? • What’s the possible hybrid network architecture for mobile TV • What’s the practical concerns of mobile TV
