Issues affecting refugees &Humanitarian entrants • Legal issues- dealing with the police, DV and Child Protection System, • Financial management, • Family and relationship in Australia, • Accommodation, • Unemployment and mismatch b/t skills & occupation, • Education challenges (SydWest MSI 2009-2010, DIAC 2011).

  5. Contributing factor to intergenerational conflict • English language barriers, • Unemployment, • Lack of understanding of Australian legal system: Child protection, Centrelink benefits, (youth allowance and parenting payment).

  6. Contributing factor for intergenerational conflict • Cultural clash, pressure to adjust and fit into Australian culture, • Pressure from family to conform to African culture, values and beliefs, • Identity crises(Identity Moratorium) Marcia 1966 • Media and technology, • Peer pressure.

  7. Consequences • Family breakdown, • Anger, dismay and despair on parents, • Distress on young people (Lim et al 2009), • Depression on elderly people (Mui and King 2006), • Acculturative stress (Berry et al 1987; William and Berry 1991).

Coping strategies: Family HARMONY Program Community development model • Promotes effective communication within families, • Training of bi-lingual facilitators, • To facilitate sessions for parents and children, • Empowering the target group, • Promotes dialogue between parents and young people, • Apply win-win method to resolve conflicts, • Assist families to become more confidence.

Cont’ Collaborative Integrated Model • Work in partnership with other service providers and communities, • Cultural sensitive and cultural appropriateness, • Assisting the target group to have better skills of family conflict resolution, dealing with family power struggle, how to react to conflict and negotiation.
