  3. The path to getting where you want to go can seem unclear. Here is some information to help clear your way! Got Questions? • Do I need a high school diploma to get into a university degree program? • No. You need THE BIG FIVE. • What are THE BIG FIVE?? • To get entrance into any university, you require academic grade 12 English. In Alberta, that is English 30-1. The other FOUR courses are determined by the degree program you are looking to access. Each program within each Faculty has a specific prerequisitedemand: so ALWAYS confirm the prerequisites with TheStudent Support and Career Centre at Centre High Campus on the 4th floor,or the specific institution you want to attend. • Can you give me an example of what the other four courses might be? • You select your other four prerequisites from the 30 level courses grouped across the content areas – from Humanities (group A), to Fine Arts (B) to Sciences (C). In some rare cases, there are “optional” courses you may use depending on your degree program. For example, if you want to do a Bachelor of Physical Education, you may use Phys. Ed. 30. • What are Humanities (A)? • The courses that fall into this category include: English 30-1, Social Studies 30-1 or Aboriginal Studies 30; a 30-level language other than English 30-1. For an extensive list of what languages you may use, go to the Student Support and Career Centre ! • What about Math? • Math falls under the Sciences (C) category. Within the Sciences group, the 30 level courses you can use depending on which program you are trying to access include: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Science, Math 30-1 (or 30-2 depending on the program), Math 31, or/and 5 credits in CSE/CTS 3000 levels (again, depending on the program). • What about Fine Arts (B)? What falls into this group? • Art 30 or 31, 5 credits in Communication Technology Advanced, Dance 35, Drama 30, Music 30, • Music Theatre 35, Music 35, Choral 30, Performing Arts 35 A, B, or C, or Advanced Acting 35.

  4. I want to attend a university. What should I be doing at CHC to make sure my goal is met? • First step is to select your Career Goal. The degree program you access at university is determined by what you want to do for a career when you’re done. The second step is to determine which institution offers the program you need. Each university institution arranges it programs differently, and not all universities offer all programs. You might have to move. Remember: sometimes it’s not about where you want to go, it’s where you can go. • So after I match my career goal to the program and institution, what do I do next? • It’s time to make sure you’re in the right classes and that you know the competitive grade point average needed to get into the program. These change every year! • Where can I find out what classes I need, and what the competitive GPA is? • The Student Support and Career Centre They will help you build the timetable you need to get to where you want to go. They can also help you with applying to your program, student finance information, scholarships, and accessing your transcripts. • What if I don’t know what I want to do after university? • Unless you have a lot of time and lots of money to spend on tuition, you might want to spend some time doing research about YOURSELF. What do you like to do? What are you good at? What are your passions in life? Knowing yourself and what you want out of life is hugely important to the kind of career you might want to pursue. TheStudent Support and Career Centre can assist you with a survey to help identify your interests and skills, that you can then use to explore specific career options. • Can I still apply to a program even though I don’t know what career I want? • Yes. Many first year university students change their minds; its very normal! • I still have lots of questions about university and programs that I am interested in. Where can I go to get some advice and guidance? • The Student Support and Career Centre – 4th Floor, Centre High Campus! We have been helping students just like you get into university for over fifteen years. We know what we’re doing, and we’re here to help. • Just come on up, and get started.

  5. What can I do for post-secondary other than university? As one of many choices, you can attend a polytechnic and applied sciences institution like NAIT!
