Apprenticeship • Earn while you learn • 85% of the learning is on the job • taught one-on-one by a journeyperson already trade certified • 15% of the learning is in apprenticeship courses • taught at a local community college • Talk with the co-op department if you are considering entering an apprenticeship program or want more information
College • Combine theoretical and applied learning • Often prepares for employment in such areas as: • Applied Arts (e.g. animation, design, media) • Business (e.g marketing, accounting, supply chain management) • Community Services (social service worker, early childhood educator) • Health and Human Services (fitness, nursing, veterinary technician) • Technology (chemical laboratory technician, electronic design, electronics engineering technician) • May be a transition pathway: General Arts and Science Program for two years and then transfer to University (check transfer agreements)
Diploma Programs • Two or three years of study • Usually requires: • Graduation from high school • Grade 12 English (U or C level) • Senior level courses • Some programs require specific courses like: • Grade 11 or 12 science • Math • Grade 12 Mathematics for College Technology OR any grade 12 math OR grade 11 Functions
Entrance Requirements for Diploma Programs • Averages are usually 65% or above (including co-op) • Highly competitive programs are much higher • Prerequisite courses marks are included • Often prefer a good grade in College English and Math courses instead of a mediocre grade at the University level
College Degree Programs • Earn a degree at a university • Some are considered “applied” degrees • Many degree programs qualify for graduate studies and professional schools (law school, medical school, teacher’s college) • 4 years of academic study and practical experience • Requires 6 grade 12 U or M courses • Examples: • Bachelor of Film and Television (Sheridan College) • Bachelor of Aviation (Seneca College) • Bachelor of Applied Business (George Brown College)
Joint College/University Programs • Earn a degree and a diploma at the same time in four years • Involves a partnership between a college and university • Admission requires 6 grade 12 U or M level courses • Examples: • New Media or Journalism at U of T Scarborough/Centennial College • Nursing at Ryerson/George Brown • Kinesiology at University of Guelph/Humber College • Medical Radiation Sciences at McMaster/Mohawk College • Broadcast – Television at York/Seneca
University WHY? • specific career goals that require a university education • passion for theoretical and conceptual learning WHO is university for? • Someone who…. • enjoys conceptual course material and theoretical learning • is able to complete most course work independently • able to understand, read, review, and complete assignments independently (very little professor support) • has a minimum 75% average in 6 “U” or “M” courses, including prerequisites
Entrance Requirements • Based on top six grade 12 “U” or “M” level courses • Prerequisite courses are included • Every university calculates averages slightly differently • Repeated or non-day school courses may be treated differently • Some programs state minimum course averages • e.g. 70% in ENG4U or MHF4U • Offers you receive during this year are conditional • offers will state averages you must maintain at the end of the school year
Supplementary Applications • A written application some university programs require in addition to your OUAC application • Deadlines are firm • Provide references or proofreaders enough time to support you • If emails are required, be professional • If it’s optional, do it! • Sometimes transcripts are required • Provide at least 2 days notice to guidance • One is complimentary, $2 each thereafter
College Applications • Ontario Colleges Application Centre (OCAS) • Login by creating your own username and password • Apply by February 1, 2015 for equal consideration • rolling acceptances afterwards if programs have not filled • Highly competitive applications start sooner (website opens in early October) • child and youth worker, electrician apprenticeship, fitness and health promotion, medical laboratory technician, physiotherapy assistant
College Application Fees Base Application Fee: $95 (for five program choices) Method of payment: Credit card and online banking You can apply to a maximum of three program choices at any one college WE NEED YOUR PERMISSION TO SHARE INFORMATION WITH OCAS!
Important Dates for College • November 24, 2014—Earliest day college may acknowledge your application • February 1, 2015 – Application deadline for equal consideration AND earliest release of offers by the colleges • May 1, 2015 – Confirm your offer of admission • June 15, 2015– You may be required to make a tuition deposit
University Application Details • All application made through Ontario University Application Centre (OUAC 101) • You must login with an assigned PIN • OUAC is responsible for: • collecting marks from high schools • distributing marks to universities • sending applications • listing offers of admissions WE NEED YOUR PERMISSION TO SHARE INFORMATION WITH OUAC!
University Application Fees Base Application Fee: $140 (for three program choices) Additional choice Fee: $ 47 Method of payment: Credit card and online banking You can apply to a maximum of three program choices at any one university
PIN Numbers • PIN numbers will be distributed in late November • Keep your PIN number confidential • Apply online at OUAC by January 14, 2015 • DO NOT LEAVE APPLICATIONS TO THE LAST MINUTE • Anticipate website issues and holiday closures
Important Dates for University • January 14, 2015 (11:59 p.m.) – Last day to apply online • May 28, 2015– Latest date to receive university decision – conditional offers, refusals or deferrals pending more information • June 1, 2015 – Recommendeddate by which students should respond to an offer of admission or make a financial commitment
Making Informed Decisions • Research online: • electronicinfo.ca • ontariocolleges.ca • View school books and calendars • Attend presentations at Bur Oak • Attend open houses, preview days, and tours • After conducting your own research, discuss interests and goals with parents, teachers, and guidance counselors
Community Hour Completion • Final deadline to complete 40 hours is May 31stif you wish to graduate in June
Submission of Grades • Gr 11 marks and demographic info: November • Gr 12 semester 1 final marks: February • Gr 12 semester 2 midterm marks: April • Gr 12 final marks: July • All marks (day school, night school, virtual school, private school) are submitted • Be aware of full disclosure dates
Dropping Classes • MUST remain a full time student • 3 courses per semester • Scheduled courses will not be dropped in order to take it in night school, e-learning, or private school
Private School • Before making commitments at a private school please fill out the green Private School Declaration Form from Guidance • Do not assume the course will be dropped from your timetable • It is your responsibility to ensure that your final private school grade is submitted to Guidance three days prior to graduation • We cannot submit midterm marks for private school
Paying for School: College • Tuition varies greatly depending on program of study • Talk with your family to plan how you will afford post secondary * apprentices are paid for their work placement; carpenters earn about $44,650 a year

Finding the Funds • Automatic school entrance scholarships • Grades can be worth thousands of dollars!!! • Apply for scholarships and bursaries • Check the guidance website for useful links • Check college/university websites for information • Apply for OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program) • Available in May • Begin saving money – part-time and summer jobs • RESP – Registered Educational Savings Plan • Aim to reduce your debt load while in school!
Understanding Scholarships Entrance • Based on grades – varies by university and college • Minimum average is 80% - they don’t round up! • Renewable – varies based on school and grades Other Scholarships • Check the bulletin board outside guidance and the guidance website • Get applications in early! Graduation Awards • 10 awards, $150-$250 each • Awards are based on teacher nominations
