The FLiP Project Flexible In-Company Postgraduate Learning
The FLiP Project • Determine effectiveness of web-based postgraduate learning programmes. • Initiated in 2kl by the Technology Innovation Centre (TIC). • FLiP project consortium : Bolton Institute of Higher Education, Staffordshire University and LTSN Engineering.
Why do it? • Investigate the current practices in WBL • To investigate and systematically evaluate the appropriateness of technology to deliver a quality learning experience. • To consider the use of both problem-based and content-based learning philosophies when using web-based technologies
How we learnt • 12 months of solid research into existing WBL methodologies to determine ‘good’ practice • Implemented current practices into four pilot studies between Bolton HE and TIC • We sought to examine both problem-based and content-based methodologies and to establish how effective they were in a web-based environment.
The Pilot Studies • Pilot 1 • Bolton Institute - Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) “Managing Safety” Module – Content based. • TIC - Materials Management Module (part of MSc in Logistics) – Problem Based • Pilot 2 • Bolton Institute - Health & Safety Act 1974 Module (part of NEBOSH Certificate) – Problem Based • TIC - Supply Chain Management (part of MSc in Logistics) - Content Based
Outputs of the FLiP Project • Practice Guide for Part-Time Work-Based Web-Based Learners • Three Academic Papers • Three Workshops • 4. A Dissemination website
What can we do for you today? • Present a draft copy of our Practice Guide and answer any questions about it. A register will be available to sign up for a copy of the final draft. • Share our experiences of the problem-based and content-based learning methodologies. • Discuss practical issues of implementing a web-based learning strategy within an academic institution.
