  4. Famous For • Center of Islam • Baghdad was the center of learning. Scholars would come from all over the world from different cultures and religions to learn and study in Baghdad. • Known for being the most intellectual city of its time. • Center for international trade in the Middle East. • Known as the circular city for its basic framework, being two large semicircles. • Baghdad was known for its museums, hospitals, and mosques.

  5. What Visitors would find • Libraries in Baghdad were considered intellectual centers and are one of the places to visit • Great culture through religion (Mostly Islamic religion) and food • Arabic language spoken • Beautiful Architecture in the various mosques and shrines

  6. Religion • Islamic Religion, spread by Muhammad • If not Islamic, it is generally accepted and not looked down upon. • Religion is a big part of Baghdad, it founded the entire city

Landmarks • Landmarks include famous mosques, Round City of Baghdad, Qureish cemeteries, Kadhimain Shrine, shrine of Imam Abu Hanifa, Mosque of Sheikh AbdulQader Al-Jailani, Mausoleum of Omar Al-Sahrawardi, SittZumurrudKhatun's Tomb, The Caliphs Mosque, Mosque and Mausoleum of Al-Imam Al-Aadham • Many landmarks are places of worship

  10. History • Baghdad was founded by Abu Jagar-al Mansur, the second caliph of the Abbasid Empire. • The creation of Baghdad was originally to be the capitol of the newly founded Abbasid Empire and to represent beauty and expansion. And it did just that.

Downfall • After 500 years of being a cultural super power, Baghdad began to lose its vitality and presence in the Muslim world. • As a void between Muslims began to form, Sunni’s and Shiites, growing angst began to build in Baghdad. Violence broke out in the city in the form of fires and vast floods. • The city of Baghdad was eventually raided in 1258 by Mongols. It has been said that the Tigris and Euphrates rivers ran red with the blood of scholars. Many of the great historical treasures of Baghdad were forever ruined. • Baghdad began a long period of decline and became subject to many wars.
