  1. Everyday Products: Best Engineering Design Concept Exposure Dr. John M Mativo The University of Georgia

  2. Everyday Products? • Paper • Sink • Table • Shoe • Automobile • Computer • Any other….

  3. Engineering Design Concepts • Engineering Design • Process of devising a system, component, or process to meet desired needs • A decision-making process (often iterative) • Use basic sciences, mathematics, & engineering sciences to convert resources optimally to meet a stated objective • Fundamental element: establishment of objective, criteria, synthesis, analysis, construction, & evaluation

  4. Reverse Engineering • Process of discovering the technological principles of a device, object or system through analysis of its structure, function and operation

  5. Approach for Reverse Engineering • Choose familiar local products that can be used to provide relevant study: • e.g. Paper, sink, table, shoe, automobile, computer • Single material products (paper, sink, table) pose a challenge. • Multiple material product provide a better platform for reverse engineering (shoe, automobile, computer)

  6. Paper • What is paper? • Explore types of paper, paper fiber and chemical composition • Detective work- check under microscope, fibers type and density, chemical composition • What can be learned?

  7. Table • What is a table? • Explore types of tables and table materials: folding, fixed, outdoor, indoor, plastic, wood, composite, etc. • Detective work- pick a table, decide if it can be disassembled • What can be learned?

  8. Automobile • Multi part product – choose a component (engine, tire, power windows, etc) • E.g. engine • Detective work- pick an engine type • What can be learned?

  9. Engine: Engineering Design • Engineering concepts learned using the automobile engine (reverse engineering) • Sketching – Engineering graphics (geometry, dimensioning, tolerance…) • Materials used in making an engine • Mechanical cycles (statics & dynamics) • Thermodynamic cycle (Energy balance) • Thermal management (heat transfer)

  10. Engine sketch

  11. Engine parts and materials • Materials Science • Material structure • Crystalline • Atomic • Grain • Materials properties • Mechanical • physical

  12. Engine mechanical cycles • Power Plant – Internal Combustion Engine • Mechanical cycle (four or two) http://mit.edu/16.unified/www/FALL/thermodynamics/notes/node26.html

  13. Engine thermodynamic cycles • Thermodynamic cycle (Q-W=ΔE) • Pressure – volume (energy balance) • Stoichiometric C + H (fuel)] + [O2 + N2 (Air)] -> (Combustion Process) -> [CO2 + H2O + N2 (Heat)

  14. Engine thermal Management

  15. Reverse Engineering Advantages Opportunity for detective work – considered interesting Unlimited access to products Use instructor strength (confidence) Opportunity to test or assess if done well Opportunity to show relevance of engineering design use of math, science, and technology
