Green is here to stay:Increasing environmental sustainability through the use of IT Justin Davidson jdavidson@datamonitor.com 7th November 2007
Agenda • Introduction • Government mandates • Calculating CO2 emissions • Technology part of broader strategy • Home working – a possible solution • Seeking advice
Introduction • Technology is proving an important resource for helping to reduce carbon footprint • Datamonitor conducted a survey of 100 IT decision makers
“Climate change doesn’t discriminate. Whether you’re a business, a government, or an individual, it is a threat to us all and therefore a challenge for us all.” – [David Miliband, Former Environmental Secretary] • Maintain and increase support • Mandates have had influence…and should be built upon 29% of agencies are now compelled to invest in cars that have low CO2 emissions
Central government should work with the EU and local government to exert more influence What issues drove your organization to enact these environmental sustainability initiatives? Need to reduce costs Central government mandate EU mandate Local government mandate Public relations goals Pressure from employees Demand from constituents (such as citizens, students, patients) Tax benefits Protect the environment We do not have or are not planning any initiatives to promote environmental sustainability 0% 10% 20% 30% 40% 50% 60% 70% n=100 Respondents may answer “yes” to all or none of the options
21% 27% Don't know No Yes 52% Without calculating their CO2 emissions agencies will struggle to reduce their carbon footprint • Government guidance • Calculating carbon emissions • Impact of actions • Conscientious employees Do you calculate your carbon emissions? n=100
Disposing of electronic equipment in an environmentally friendly way Recycling (all types) Encourage our employees to switch off their electronic equipment at night Staff/department exclusively dedicated to sustainability projects Other Flexible working hours (to limit commuting during peak traffic hours) Energy efficient cooling/heating Promoting telecommuting (e.g. working from home) Reduce employee travel commitments Schemes promoting car sharing Purchasing carbon offsets 0% 5% 10% 15% 20% 25% 30% Consider less conventional ways to reduce CO2 emissions What initiatives aimed at promoting environmental sustainability does your organization most actively promote? External to how an organisation operates Requires organisational change n=100
Home working has previously provided challengesto the public sector • Culture • Security • Infrastructure • Concern of cost • Fear of declining productivity
IMPLEMENT HOME WORKING = REDUCTION IN CO2 EMISSIONS INCREASED EMPLOYEE SATISFACTION ....so are these challenges too much to overcome? NO! • Technology: broadband, security/encryption • Productivity: sickness rates down, employee satisfaction up • Technology vendors that have their own green credentials • Case studies of clients • Results • Not just a public sector challenge – a challenge for all sectors
Conclusion: Where to look for inspiration • Lack of funding and insufficient staff are the major challenges • Look for innovators • Private sector can be of assistance • IT vendors can complement a complete environmental policy….not solve it
