  6. Scrooge did not like to spend his money, that it why the fire in his office was very small and Bob Cratchit’s hands were so cold that he could not write.

  7. Suddenly, a young and cheerful voice cried, “Merry Christmas, uncle! God save you!” It was his nephew.

  8. “Humbug!” said Scrooge, using his favourite word.” Merry Christmas! You have no right to be merry. You are poor.” Really, the nephew was poor but happy, because had a family.

  9. Scrooge could not understand it. He thought that love was even sillier than a Merry Christmas. Scrooge’s nephew wanted to invite his uncle for dinner with his family but Scrooge didn’t want to hear about it and the young man left wishing his uncle a Merry Christmas.

  12. It grew colder and colder outside. The fog and darkness thickened so that the ancient church tower was hardly seen. A boy sang a Christmas carol outside the front door of Scrooge’s office.

  13. Scrooge got very angry. He picked up a big ruler and opened the door so quickly that the frightened small singer ran away as fast as he could.

  14. Part II

  15. At last it was time to shut up the office. The next day was twenty-fifth of December and the office should be closed for Christmas. As soon as Scrooge walked out, Bob Cratchit closed the office and ran home to play Christmas games with his children.

  16. Scrooge took his melancholy [mel∂nk∂li] dinner in his melancholy tavern [tӕv∂n]; read newspapers and went home to bed. His house was dark and old.

  17. He was sitting alone before his small fire when he had heard his doorbell ring. Then the heavy door of Scrooge’s room opened and he saw … a ghost. It was the ghost of Marley [ma:li] , his partner, who died several years ago.

  18. “Why do you trouble me?” he asked the ghost. Marley’s Ghost explained that he had been very selfish when he was alive. He had been interested only in money and had not cared about people outside his office. Noe he was wearing a long and heavy chain and he had no rest and no peace.

  35. The Ghost disappeared and Scrooge saw the Ghost Yet to Come, the Ghost of the Future. This was very silent, he just took Scrooge to the centre of London. Then spirit showed him a group of businessmen, and Scrooge came up to them to listen to their talk.
