What is a PSP? • Personal Safety Plan (PSP) = A personalized plan detailing specific behaviors you can exhibit to improve your performance in safety, security, health and the environment • The PSP should be a to-do list created and applied to enhance personal safety behavior and encourage a personal commitment to safety. • It should cover both work and personal related areas.

Ideas for your PSP • On site • How many times do you visit/attend: • The fabrication site • Toolbox talks • Safety Walks • How many times do you: • Submit an O&I card • Present Safety Moments? • Ergonomics • Emergency contact • Do you carry an emergency card with you at all times? • Do you have the emergency phone number stored in your phone? • Who do you call if you need help? • Commute to work • Driving safety • Do you own or have thought about owning a scooter? • How can you make you and your family more safe? • What are your hobbies and what are the risks/what do you want to change? • Cycling • Do you wear a helmet? • Do you have reflective clothing/lights for at night? • Travelling • Do you always travel prepared? Do you have a checklist for when you travel? Does your family know what to do in case of an emergency when you are travelling? • Cooking • How often do you sharpen your knives? • Do you keep your kitchen safe for your children? • Have you thought about ergonomics issues in the kitchen? • Your health • Exercise, eating healthy, minimize stress • What do you do on your weekends?
PSP Building Process • Step 1 – Brainstorm to identify unsafe behaviors or activities • Which behaviors do you need to change first? • How do you think others would look at your behaviors? • Step 2 – Make a prioritized list of goals to improve your behavior • Things you personally can do that could improve your SSH&E behavior • Think of things you already do that put you at higher risk at work AND outside work • Action goals should be achievable within one year • Try to include Security, Safety, Health & Environment, at the office and outside the office • Step 3 – Find a Thinking Partner • Someone you can trust (Friend, Spouse, Colleague, Manager) • Meet and narrow your list to 3-4 actionable items you both feel are achievable for you and will have a significant impact on you and your colleagues/family/friends etc.
PSP Building Process • Step 4 – Set Goals • Behavioral Goals = Each goal points to a specific action(s) you can perform for SSH&E Leadership improvement • SMART goals = Specific Measurable Attainable Realistic Timely • Step 5 – Write your Action Plan • Fill in PSP template (or modify template to your liking) • This is YOUR PERSONAL SAFETY, Security, Health & Environment plan • Include action goals YOU feel personally motivated to work on and achieve • Step 6 – Share your Plan • Meet with your Thinking Partner • Get feedback from spouses, friends, or colleagues • Step 7 – Achieve your Goals • Frequently refer to PSP and mark your progress • Ask your colleagues and leaders how their PSP goals are coming along
