The vision • Our vision is a world where all people have access to safe drinking water and sanitation; a world where no one suffers or dies from a water or sanitation related disease
The challenge • 884 million people do not have access to safe drinking water • 2.6 billion are without adequate sanitation facilities • Every day, nearly 6,000 people (mostly children) die from water-related illnesses
WATER FOR PEOPLE • WFP supports sustainable water and sanitation solutions in 11 Countries, from Asia and Africa to Central and South America • Founded in the early 1990s by the AWWA, WFP is the organization’s “charity of choice”. WFP – Canada was founded in 1995 and coordinates fundraising in Canada and the direction of Canadian funds
The goals • 100% sustainable coverage of water and sanitation in an entire Region • Communities never have to ask another external agency to fix or replace their system • Service is continuous, down time is limited to operations and maintenance and systems are replaced with local resources • Our model becomes sector policy, others follow our model at a grander scale • Water For People closes country programs because model is adopted, applied or considered irrelevant
The Difference • Water For People doesn’t walk into a community, drill a well and then leave: • Solutions are developed with the local community • Construction is done by the community with the support of WFP in-country staff • Locals are trained to maintain the system • WFP volunteers perform on-going monitoring of the systems, suggesting improvement and reporting on sustainability
The IMPACT - 2010 • Total number of beneficiaries (2009): • Water: 209,336 • Sanitation: 118,055 • WFP-Canada donated $281,619 • Total of $12,317,196 raised • An additional $1,659,195 was leveraged from local governments, communities and other partners and donated to specific projects directly, not WFP
OWWA – wfpC committee The OWWA has a Water For People Committee who’s mandate is focused on fundraising and awareness Committee reps are OWWA members from around the province In 2011 we’ve raised (so far) approximately $19,000 100% of the funds raised by the committee go directly to WFPC Watch for the 2011 Events including: Annual Ski Day (Jan/Feb) London area curling funspiel (March) Equipment Association’s annual golf tourney (May) Silent Auction at the Annual Conf. (May) KW Area Slo-pitch tourney (Oct)
