  3. Call Numbers:What are call numbers?? A call number represents an item's subject matter and indicates the location on the shelf where the item can be found.

  4. Dewey Decimal System In the Dewey Decimal classification system, books on similar subjects are grouped together by means of their call numbers. The main Dewey Decimal classes are: 000 Generalities  100 Philosophy and psychology  200 Religion  300 Social Sciences 400 Language 500 Natural sciences and mathematics  600 Technology (Applied sciences)  700 The arts (fine and decorative)  800 Literature and rhetoric  900 Geography and history

  5. In our Library NonFiction Shelved using the Dewey Decimal System EXAMPLE Book Title: Cambridge Guide to Stars and Planets Author: Patrick Moore and WilTirion Call Number: 520 MOO

  6. In our Library Reference Books Shelved using a “R” for Reference, the Dewey Decimal System number, the first 3 letters of the author’s last name, or the first 3 letters of the book title if there is no specific author. EXAMPLE Book Title: Career Discovery Encyclopedia Call Number: R 331.702 CAR

  7. In our Library Biographies Shelved using a “B” for Biography, and the person’s last name EXAMPLE Book Title: Houdini Author: Clinton Cox Call Number: B HOU

  8. In our Library Fiction Shelved using an “F” for Fiction, and the last name of the author. EXAMPLE Book Title: The Outsiders Author: S. E. Hinton Call Number: F HIN
