The program aims to teach the value of Career and Technical Education (CTE) to elementary and middle school students while emphasizing the importance of math and science. Through hands-on learning experiences, students are encouraged to stay in school and make connections with their local schools and community.

Purpose of the Program • To teach elementary and middle school students the value of Career and Technical Education • To show students the need for a solid understanding of math and science • To provide the students with an experience utilizing a hands on style of learning (Differentiated Learning) • To encourage students to stay in school (you can learn and have fun • To make the connections with the local schools and the community
Wexford-Missaukee ISD Demographics • Includes seven school districts: Cadillac, Lake City, Manton, Marion, McBain, Mesick and Pine River School Districts • Covers Wexford and Missaukee Counties plus portions of Osceola, Lake, Manistee, Grand Traverse and Clare Counties • Covers 1,051 square miles • Enrollment Grades K-9: Approx. 7000 Students

First Grade: • 2010-11 SY was the first year with this partnership that involved 69 first grade students from 2 classes • Partnership between First Grade and Public Safety • Academic Lesson: Describe fire and burn hazards, demonstrate actions to take in a fire emergency, Practice escaping unsafe situations, proper safety techniques • GLCE: Strand 3 & 4: Core Concepts, Access Information, Health Behaviors

Second Grade: • 2010-11 SY was the first year with this partnership that involved 104 second grade students from 3 classes • Partnership between Second Grade and Allied Health Technologies • Academic Lesson: To practice health behaviors and how to ask for help from adults • GLCE: Strand 5: Personal Health and Wellness
Third Grade: • Partnership between 3rd grade and Agriscience and Natural Resources • Academic lesson: To learn the plant systems, including roots, stems, leaves, and photosynthesis • Identify various micro-organisms in water and on plants using our lab microscopes • Weather permitting, a field trip to Identify and gather native plants from the 170 ISD-owned acres located behind the CTC • GLCE: L.OL.E.31, L.OL.41, L.OL.03.41, L.EV.03.11, L.EV.03.12, L.EV.03.12
Fourth Grade: • Partnership between 4th grade and Computers, Networking and Electronics Technology • Academic lesson: To read and assemble the project using schematics, circuits and soldering • Correctly completed circuit will chirp; incorrectly completed circuit will not • Students troubleshoot and learn about quality control • GLCE: P.EN.E.1, P.EN.04.41-.43, P.EN.E.5, P.EN.04.51, P.EN.04.52

Fifth Grade: • Partnership between 5th grade and Building Trades • Academic lesson: To use fractions and decimals in calculating dimensions and building costs • CTC students visit elementary school to teach a math lesson on fractions • Make Christmas present for family member • GLCE: N.FL.05.18, N.FL.05.20, N.MR.05.19, N.MR.05.21, G.GS.05.07

Sixth Grade: • Partnership between 6th grade and Metal Fabrication • Academic lesson: To use basic algebraic expressions in reading a blueprint and to experience basic science-related activities such as metal inert and oxy-fuel gases • Students will complete GMAW fillet weld and use cutting torches • GLCE: N.MR.06.01 thru N.MR.06.04, A.RP.06.02, M.UN.06.01, M.PS.06.02, M.TE.06.03, G.GS.06.01-.02, G.TR.06.03-.04
Robo Table: • An integrated, differentiated form of instruction designed to reinforce math concepts already taught through existing curriculum • 5th grade was identified as the grade to target based on research from the State Superintendent of Instruction’s Office • Academic lessons: To use math skills and concepts plus vocabulary (talk-the-talk) about angles, degrees & pivot points • http://www.youtube.com/user/CENTLC#p/a/1/:_uccLNqyBc
Robo Table Comment: “The students wanted to stay in from recess because of Robo Arms. Even if we have just a few minutes at the end of the day, they would ask me to start Robo Arms. This is really an applied way to teach math that the kids understand; and they love it! ” 5th Grade Teacher
Seventh thru Ninth Grade: • Program is designed for Middle School at-risk students • Each participant must meet at least five of the identified criteria • Visit each of our CTC programs over a two-year period • Third year each student identifies a preferred program for visits • CTC staff and students make a connection

Keys to Remember: • Be creative; fit your programs into GLCE. • Work with local schools for scheduling; what time during the school year are local schools are teaching the various GLCE • Prepare CTE staff and students; have CTC students practice teaching the subjects and material to be taught
