Project 1 Fundamentals and Examples. Fundamental Steps. Idea.
E N D
Idea Your idea is the problem that you see out in the world that you’d like to do something about. It can be a policy, a law, a behavior, an attitude, a mindset, or anything else that you feel causes a problem in the world in some way. This idea must be something that you feel runs counter to the goals of social justice.
How it goes against the goals of social justice Once you have an idea, you need to be able to explain how this negative thing runs counter to the goals of social justice. Social justice is the view that everyone deserves equal economic, political and social rights and opportunities (NASW). How does the problem that you’ve identified work against this principle? You must be able to explain this in your paper, so it’s good to think about it early on.
Core Statement The idea that you’ve chosen may be a law or a policy, but your core statement needs to reflect an attitude, a perception, a belief, or a mindset that allows this problem to exist. This is how you look at a problem culturally. Think of the negative things that happen in the world as symptoms and the belief that leads to these problems as the disease. Your core statement should reflect the disease, not the symptom. In essence, your core statement is the mindset that you will be arguing against this semester.
Academic Source Your academic source for this project should be an expert or group of experts who agrees with your position. This source will help you demonstrate and explain how your core statement is a cultural problem that others have noticed, too.
Cultural Artifact A cultural artifact is anything that is readily available to the public that can influence their thinking in some way. This could be writing, visual media, audio media, or any combination thereof. Examples include advertisements, popular articles, posters, songs, commercials, etc. Your artifact needs to demonstrate the cultural problem that you are working against in your core statement. Basically, your artifact helps to show the reader that there are popular media that support the mindset that you find problematic.
Idea It’s not fair that the media portrays Detroit in such a negative way. They say it’s full of crime and urban decay, but it’s not as bad as the media makes it seem.
How it goes against the goals of social justice If the view of Detroit is negative, there will be fewer tourists, lowering the revenue of business owners. Outside businesses may not want to come to Detroit based on this negative image, meaning there will be fewer new jobs for residents. Both of these unfairly lower the quality of life of the people living in Detroit.
Core Statement People believe that Detroit is a city filled with crime, urban decay, and poverty.
Idea Some mining companies remove the entire top of a mountain in order to get as much coal as possible from the site. This causes damage to the environment as well as to the landscape of the area.
How it goes against the goals of social justice The company may own the land, but removing the tops of mountains pollutes the land of others around it, damaging people’s health as well as damaging property values of home owners in the area. It also may discourage people from moving to the area, harming the overall economy of the town. The company then runs commercials to make their activities seem non-destructive.
Core Statement People believe that mountaintop removal is a harmless use of land by mining companies.
Cultural Artifact A commercial run by the West Virginia Coal Association that shows altered images of mountains that have undergone this type of mining, lending “proof” that the mining technique is harmless and non-destructive.
