Bell Ringer Name the four layers of the atmosphere and describe the temperature in each layer. • Troposphere: decreasing temp. • weather • Stratosphere: increasing temp. • Ozone layer • Mesosphere: decreasing temp. • Coldest layer • Thermosphere: increasing temp. • ionosphere
Chapter 23The Atmosphere Section 1 Characteristics of Atmosphere Notes 23-3
Air pollution • Any substance in the atmosphere that is harmful to people, animals, plants or property • Sulfur dioxide • Carbon monoxide • Lead • Hydrocarbons • Ozone
Air pollution • Effects • Long-term effects on health • Decreases one’s ability to resist many diseases • EPA’s Health Effects of Air Pollution • http://www.epa.gov/oar/oaqps/air_risc/3_90_022.html
Air Pollution • Sources • Burning of fossil fuels • Before automobiles, factories and homes burning coal was the top cause • Today it comes from burning coal and petroleum fuels • Produces • Sulfur dioxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide and lead
Air Pollution • Acid Rain • Pollutants in the air when combined with water in the atmosphere causes acid rain • Falls to the ground in the form of rain, snow, sleet or mist • Can kill crops and other plants, poison fish and ruin soil
Air Pollution • Temperature Inversion: • When warm air traps cold air at the surface of the earth • This doesn’t allow for air circulation • Normally warm air is at the surface and cold air is above it • Pollution also gets trapped • Produces smog • Combines smoke and fog
Air Pollution • Temperature Inversions • Topography can make it worse • In Los Angeles, cool Pacific air, that is polluted, is trapped. • Mountains that boarder the city keep air from circulating
