  2. Curiosity won’t kill you • Find a major that suits you. • Ask questions about individual majors • Utilize the online catalog, catalog.mtsu.edu • Utilize the general education courses to get an idea of certain areas • 1/3 of students enter MTSU undeclared every fall

  3. Make sure it’s your passion • Explore various field of study • Utilize workshops, advisors, faculty • Grab the major that greatly appeals to you and follow that path

  4. Start the conversation • Who do you know? • Campus: Advisors, Faculty, Staff, other students • Family: Parents, Cousins, Aunt, Uncle, etc. • Family friends • Some may have a degree, but most are in career that they can talk to you about. • The ins and outs. • How it is growing. • What are the needed skills. • Can you have an internship/job?

  5. Look at the wider skills • Every degree teaches you more than what is in the books. Find out from the faculty what types of transferrable skills are in a degree • Accounting – management, organization • Nursing – people skills, crisis management • SCUBA Diving – leadership, management

  6. Get Involved • Student Organizations • Leadership Opportunities • Internships • Volunteering

  7. Use your resources • Career Development Center • KUC 328 career@mtsu.edu • Assessment tools: FOCUS, Career Clusters, • What Can I Do With This Major? • Resume and Cover Letter Critique • Career Fairs

  8. Beware of the exception • If you want to be a doctor or lawyer you need to make a quick decision. There is a longer road ahead and you need to get on it sooner.
