  2. George Washington • Born 1732 • Lieutenant Colonel in French-Indian War • Was General of Continental Army • Was chosen to be first president

  3. The French Revolution • Americans welcomed the fall of the French Monarchy • As the war progressed and more blood was shed, Americans began to voice their opposition • The Franco-American alliance was an issue because it required America to support the French in their war with Britain

  4. The Citizen Genet Affair • Citizen Genet was sent by France to be to the New Ambassador to the United States • Washington turned down the two most important requests; they weren’t going to prepay their debt, and Genet couldn’t arm privateers in America for the French

  5. Proclaimation of Neutrailty • The proclamation was signed on April 22, 1793 • Created when the French declared war on England • Washington met with his Cabinet and agreed that neutrality would be best for America

  6. Jay's Treaty • On November 19, 1794 Jay's Treaty was signed • A Treaty Between United States and Great Britain • Sought to resolve unsettled issues left from the American Revolution

  7. Pinckney's Treaty • The treaty was signed at San Lorenzo El Real on October 27, 1795 • Treaty between Spain and United States • Opened up the Mississippi River to American navigation

  8. Relations with Native Americans • The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 • Indian Intercourse Act • Treaties were the only way to obtain Indian land

Hamilton’s Fiscal program • Tariff of 1789 raised duties on foreign products, which would protect American products • Congress narrowly approved the Bank of the United States • Hamilton hoped his system would promote the development of an industrial economy • Fiscal program as a whole dramatically restored the financial health of the United States.

Whiskey tax and rebellion • Hamilton recommended an excise tax on manufacture of distilled liquor.(Whiskey Tax) • uprising that had its beginnings in 1791 and culminated in an insurrection in 1794 in the locality of Washington, Pennsylvania, in the Monongahela Valley • rebellion occurred shortly after the Articles of Confederation had been replaced by a stronger federal government under the American Constitution in 1789 • whiskey was often used among western farmers as a medium of exchange or as a barter good. Large producers were assessed a tax ranging from 7 to 18 cents per gallon Washington leads his troops to western Pennsylvania (Whiskey rebellion)
